Ironic

An old man turned ninety-eight
He won the lottery and died the next day
It's a black fly in your Chardonnay
It's a death row pardon two minutes too late
Isn't it ironic... don't you think

"What a great way to start off a new career,15 minutes late!" Kristin scolded herself as she hurriedly pulled her blue BMW into the parking lot of Jive studios. Getting out, she quickly straightened her skirt, adjusted her blouse and grabbed her briefcase before briskly walking inside. In her rush she hadn't seen the young man coming around the corner as well. They collided with each other and he fell face first on top of her, his new cup of coffee adorning her blouse.

Justin blushed profusely, glancing to her eyes and pushing himself up. "I'm really sorry about that," he apologized, handing her some napkins.

Kristin sighed, late and now covered in coffee, but nodded to him. "It's okay, we were both in a rush I suppose. Do you know where the third conference room is?" She looked at him while dabbing some of the coffee off of her. "Third conference room?" He made kind of a face, "oh wait! You're our new hair and makeup artist?" Her jaw almost dropped as she nodded, "That would be me and who's OUR new hair and makeup artist?" Justin smiled and took her arm, leading her to the room. "Me, Lance, Joey, Chris, and JC we're NSYNC."

It's a free ride when you've already paid
It's the good advice that you just didn't take
Who would've thought... it figures

Sleepily yawning, Kristin wiped her eyes and straightened to re-measure Justin's pants. "You look like you need a break," Justin observed as he watched her carefully.

She shrugged a bit and wrote down the new length, marking it on the legs of the pants. "Come on, let's go get some coffee," he offered politely.

"No, I'll be okay, I still need to measure Chris and JC," she sighed. "They can wait. You look like the living dead. Just come get coffee with me, please?" he gave her a little pout that she couldn't resist. She smiled, "Okay," and put the tape measure and pencil down, going to her desk to grab her jacket.

Mr. Play It Safe was afraid to fly
He packed his suitcase and kissed his kids good-bye
He waited his whole damn life to take that flight
And as the plane crashed down he thought
"Well, isn't this nice."
And isn't it ironic ... don't you think

"Hey Kris?" Justin asked as he looked at her sitting across from him. "Yeah?" she smiled to him and sipped her cappuccino.

"Is this like a date?" he asked hopefully. "Do you want it to be?" she wondered aloud.

"Well yeah," he smiled shyly and blushed a little. She smiled back, "Then I guess it could be." He smiled brightly to her, wanting to hug her, "Ready to go back now?"

Kristin shrugged a bit and stood up. "So does this mean you'll be my girlfriend?" he asked softly, glancing to her eyes. "You want me to?" she almost whispered, looking back.

He nodded to her with a smile and slowly leaned closer. Their lips were just about to touch when a burglar broke into the restaurant and Justin immediately pulled Kristin tightly to him, hurrying to the car with her.

Justin looked around the room one last time with a smile. It was his and Kristin's 1-year anniversary and he planned on making sure they'd be together forever.

She pulled up into the driveway a minute later and he heard her heels clicking against the pavement that led to the front door. Nervously, he watched the door as it was unlocked. In slow motion she pushed it open. His breath caught in his throat, the sight of her always seemed to do that to him. Her beauty was breathtaking, and he found it hard to breathe when he first laid eyes on her.

Kristin gave him a warm smile, "Hey sweetie." Justin nervously smiled back, slowly walking to her, taking her hand and leading her to the living room with him. He heard her softly gasp when she looked around to see candles coating the room with a soft glow. Classical music played gently in the background as Justin slowly spun her to face him. He looked deeply into her eyes, swaying with her. His original plan was to propose during dessert, but he couldn't take the wait and knew it was now or never.

He slowly knelt, holding her hand gently, "Kristin, I love you," he stated to start it off. "I want you to know that I want to be with you forever." Slowly, he popped the velvet box open to reveal a small diamond ring.

Justin looked up at her frowning as she sniffed the air, "Do you smell smoke?" Justin was hurt by her not paying attention to him but his eyes quickly widened and he dropped the box in his rush to the kitchen. Coughing as the smoke filled his lungs he turned the oven off and sighed, using a towel to air the smoke out. Kristin followed him in and gave a little smile at his attempt to cook her fettuccini. Justin sighed deeply, leaning on the counter as she stood behind him, wrapping her arms around his waist and kissing his shoulder, she said, "I do."

Well life has a funny way of sneaking up on you
When you think everything's okay and everything's going right
And life has a funny way of helping you out when
You think everything's gone wrong and everything blows up
In your face

Kristin drove home happily, eager to share her news with Justin. A month after their anniversary she'd discovered she was pregnant. She parked the car fairly quickly, almost sprinting to the door.

Justin sat watching TV when she burst in excitedly. She didn't notice the streaks of tears down his face or the beer cans around him when she blurted, "Justin, I'm pregnant!"

Justin slowly looked up, hurt apparent in his eyes when she realized that the news was on, talking about the plane crash that the rest of *NSYNC was on. He tried to smile, happy for them but still discouraged by the other news. She gently hugged him, trying to soothe him but inwardly cheering about being pregnant with his child.

A traffic jam when you're already late

A no-smoking sign on your cigarette break
It's like 10,000 spoons when all you need is a knife
It's meeting the man of my dreams
And then meeting his beautiful wife
And isn't it ironic... don't you think
A little too ironic.. and yeah I really do think...

"Sweetie, we're gonna be late!" Justin announced as he waited for Kristin to go for her ultrasound another 2 months later. She came out sobbing. "We don't need to go," she choked out, looking to her tummy sadly. Justin looked confused, "What? What's wrong baby?" Tears fell down her cheeks as she rubbed her tummy, "Our baby w-was a miscarriage."

Justin felt the world stand still as he stared at her, the love of his life, so discouraged over their lost child. He couldn't stand seeing her in pain, he pulled her tightly into his arms and rocked her gently, offering his condolences.

Justin adjusted his tie with a wide smile. Today was the day. February 14th, the day of love, was their set wedding date. He knew the bride wasn't set to arrive until a few minutes before the ceremony, so he socialized with his friends in the back while they waited.

After a few minutes, he was instructed to wait at the alter and he agreed anxiously. Waiting with JC beside him, Justin impatiently awaited Kristin's arrival. "And she talks about me being late," he laughed nervously, hoping to lighten the mood a bit.

They waited another 10 minutes, 15 minutes after the wedding was set to begin. He really began to worry as each minute ticked by and she didn't walk through the door.

The priest, called away for a phone call, ran to JC and Justin, his eyebrows burrowed in regret. Justin looked frightened, not sure what to expect.

"The bride," he stated, taking in a breath, "will not be here today." Justin visibly panicked, wondering if she was too scared or hurt or something happened.

"Why not?" JC asked, swallowing hard to comprehend it.

"Kristin was in an accident on the way here a very serious one. S-she died immediately," the priest said softly, looking to Justin for his reaction. Justin couldn't breathe, shaking his head and claiming it wasn't true. She couldn't be dead! They were supposed to get married today! He got dizzy and felt the world spin as he ran out, still unbelieving.

Well life has a funny way of sneaking up on you

And life has a funny way of helping you out
Helping you out

He knelt silently in front of the tombstone. His eyes stuck on her name engraved, he still couldn't believe it. Running a finger over her name, reading Kristin Marie Summers-Timberlake, he at least wished she could have been Kristin Marie Timberlake.

Starting to realize that he would never see her again, the tears flowed. He would never see her dazzling smile, breathtaking beauty, or hear her melodious laugh. All he had to live by were the incredible memories of her. God, why had he been blessed so deeply yet his true love was taken away from him so suddenly?

Everyone knew he would have given up his career, his fame, the money all of it for her. And now more than ever he wished that she had been his only blessing, his for all eternity.

But she was. Deep in his heart he knew she loved him and only him; that she was going to marry him and be the mother of his children. He just couldn't come to terms with it that she wouldn't be there.

Justin looked down at the flowers in his hand, still fresh, they were the flowers she was to carry down the isle at the wedding. He let out a shaky breath, taking her wedding ring out of his pocket and slid it on the end of the bouquet like it would fit on her finger.

"I love you, Kristin Marie Timberlake," he said softly, kissing his hand and pressing it to her name on the stone as he set the flowers down shakily. He smiled a bit reassuringly, feeling a weight lifted off him as he looked up and the clouds parted to reveal the sun.

Smiling up at the sky, he listened to the birds singing, the crickets chirping, and children giggling, and he knew she'd always be there with him.
