President's Message
by Bill Storz
August, 2004
As I sit here watching the Olympics, I am reminded how much an organization mirrors the athletes pursuit for excellence (the GOLD Medal).  Our Society continues its pursuit of the GOLD --- GROWTH, ATTENDANCE, and PROGRAMS of INTEREST.

This past year saw the aggressive implementation of new initiatives by your board and the active membership.  The diversity of these programs and the success they achieved has resulted from member dedication, vision, and hard work.  Our Hosta Exchange in June was a tremendous achievement with members sharing unique hostas and returning home with a new addition to their own garden.  Region Ones, FIRST LOOK 4, hosted by our Society had the largest attendance ever of any First Look event. Our most recent program by Bob Solberg, an internationally known hybridizer, was a huge success.  He has introduced over 35 hostas including favorites such as Corkscrew, Fried Bananas, Guacamole, Orange Marmalade, Toy Soldier and many others.  Members enjoyed his program, talking to him, and purchasing a variety of his hostas.

If you missed any of these unique programs, you missed a tremendous opportunity to share in the HOSTA phenomenon.  Hostas have become the most sought after shade plant offering unlimited varieties and potential.

In addition to these initiatives, our traditional events the Doldrums Party (February) the Societys annual plant sale (May) and, of course, the Annual Picnic (September) continue to bring stability and growth to our Society.

Our Society has evolved, this year, from a fledgling organization begun in 1996 by Dave Jennings into one that is recognized throughout Region One and by hybridizers and growers throughout the country as a top organization --- one that can accept a challenge and accomplish it in a truly stellar fashion.

This doesnt happen in a vacuum or singularly by one individual.  Its a team effort from conception to completion membership participation is the essential ingredient.  Those of you who have been a part of this evolution can be proud of your part and your Society THANKS YOU.  Wont the rest of you join them in the pursuit of the GOLD????  We have raised the standard setting the example for other organizations to strive for.  Keep up the good work.

See you ALL at Dan and Joanne Maiers for the picnic and a celebration of a very successful year.
