Well, it wasnt green we were seeing on St. Pattys Day, but a 6 8 inch white blanket covering those Ephemerals (thanks John for that word) beginning to emerge and announce that Spring was on its way. Those early weeks in March saw many of us out clearing away winters debris and leaves from our flowerbeds and yards. What a tease Mother Nature is!!! It was good to see and talk to Hosta friends at the March meeting while we enjoyed Fred Breglias presentation on New and Unusual Ornamental Trees for Landscaping.
By the time you receive this Newsletter, spring will have arrived and our focus will be on the garden what survived the winter? What to add, move, or divide? -- How better to create the ideal landscape. I am anxious to see if our early blooms can survive the bud-eating squirrels and how many of our Hosta succumbed to voles. Hope you dont face these same problems.
Just as spring is a time of renewal, so is your commitment to UNYHS. If your address label shows an 03, its time to renew your membership. More importantly, its a time to think about why you joined this organization. What do you expect from UNYHS? What are you willing to contribute to meet these expectations?? The Board of Directors works very hard to achieve the goals of this organization to focus on the societys needs, to be responsive to the membership, and to advance genus Hosta within an educational and social atmosphere. This is difficult to accomplish when less than a third of the membership attends meetings and events. Communication is critical. Attendance, at the meetings, is the forum that allows the membership active participation in determining the direction of UNYHS. PLEASE, make the effort to attend and participate. We all enjoy plant sales and picnics, but there is more ---- programs, nursery/garden visits, and events (such as First Look) create vibrancy in the organization and enhance personal horticultural growth.
Your Board has put together a very aggressive program to meet these needs --- Your involvement and commitment will make them all the more successful. Attend the April 24th meeting Come to the plant sale and pot luck May 22nd Identify now!! That unique Hosta that you can divide and share at our first Hosta Exchange and pot luck June 13th Commit early on to attend and help at First Look - July 17 & 18 Support Bob Solbergs program on August 7th
I could go on and address each of these in depth, but that is what our meetings and articles within the Newsletter do. The informational exchanges and friendships that come out of these events are what make our society special.
Wont you become an involved participant of the UNYHS experience??? |
