Epidural and Spinal Block
These are often used in vaginal birth and c-sections. During the administration of these medications, you will be asked to sit on the edge of the bed curled over (to create space between your vertbrae) your back is then scrubbed with an antiseptic. Then an anesthetic is injected to numb the site. Afterwards, a needle is inserted between 2 vertabrae and through the tissue beside the spinal column
Advantages: * These are the most effective forms of pain relief while being able to stay awake and alert. * You have the chance to relax which saves energy for pushing * It can increase blood flow to the uterus *It's possible, although very hard, to regulate the medicine so you can feel a little more when it is time to push.
Disadvantages: * May cause numbness in your legs which results in not being able to walk * It is necessary to have an IV and fetal monitor * An epidural can be hard to place *It can take up to 20 minutes to take affect. So, it may be placed to late to be of any help * Any regional anesthetic can be an additional expense.
