Cradle Cap, Diaper Rash, & Thrush
Cradle Cap
Thrush
How to recognise it- when your baby has thrush, it looks like he/she has patches of milk on the inside of their cheeks and/or tounge that will not wash off. If you scrape it away, it looks like a sore underneath. Which may cause discomfort to your baby.
What causes it?- Thrush is a yeast infection in the baby's mouth. It's more likely to occur after an illness or when the mouth's bacteria balance has been upset by medications.
How serious is it?- Thrush can be painful in severe cases, but generally does not cause discomfort or serious problems.  It can also lead to diaper rash as the yeast travels through the gastrointestional tract.
What can you do?- Mild thrush resolves with out treatment. If the thrush is more extensive, your doctor may prescribe medications.
When to call the doctor- If your baby's mouth becomes increasingly coated and causes discomfort or your baby has difficulty swallowing.
This is called Seborrheic dermatitis. It looks yellow, pink, or brownish, thickened, greasy skin areas. It most often appears on the scalp.
From my previous experience, I have found that rubbing lotion lightly on their head 3-4 times a day will keep this from happenning.
It could also be eczema. If your baby is squirming and try to rub his/her head, as if trying to scratch it. You may want to call your doctor. If they do get "cradle cap", use lotions such as Nutrigema that is dye and sent free to avoid further irritating it.
Diaper Rash
How to recognise it- This is common among infants and most infants develpoe them. A rash from irratation may only affect the skin surface. A diaper rash from a yeast infection is usually in the creases as well. It is often a bright red rash.
What causes it?- This can be caused by the baby's skin being moist or an infection. Yeast, which is found on the skin, grows well in warm moist places. It could also be an allergic reaction to the wipes or diapers. If you are using a new wipe or diaper, try switching to a different brand. Pampers Sensitive wipes has worked well for my daughter.
How serious is it?- The only problems it may cause is discomfort with your infant. Try treating it before the yeast has the chance to grow.
What can you do?- When you notice your baby is getting a rash (preferably before), leave the diaper off for a while to expose the area to air and help it stay dry. You can also use Desitin (or a similar product) which also works well with rash not due to yeast infection.
When to call the doctor- If the rash has lasted more than a couple days.
