eHortus, version 2001.2 (July) The Online Newsletter of the UP Horticultural Society Alumni Association Written by Mr. Lyle Baconguis Greetings fellow Hortsoccers! This issue is a bit delayed as work and travel has taken up most of my time. Nevertheless, we are happy to be back on line to provide you with more HortSoc updates. We are delighted with the visits of nostalgic members (and non-members) to our website. Gino Manalastas over in Tokyo, Japan, has been doing a good job keeping it updated. We will try to put in new features to keep up with your interests. Do keep sending your photos and updates to Gino <[email protected]>. The resident members elected new officers for the 2001-2002 school year. The new officers are led by the new president JANICE MATIRA and vice president SHIELA TULIO. The other officers are: ORVILLE BALDOS, secretary, APRIL ZYLLAH GERGON, treasurer, JESSICA ORTEGA, auditor, LLOYD PAPAG, PRO, and IRYN ROSE CRASCO, business manager. Appointed to head committees were NELLIE ANN GARCIA, academic committee, HERLO AJOLE, sports committee and JOSIEBETH BONIFACIO, sociocom. Good luck to the new officers! The recent commencement exercises at UPLB last 21 April 2001 almost wiped out the resident membership of HortSoc as 15 members received their BSA degrees. Our new alumni members were led by former presidents MA. RENEL CALIBO (Los Banos) and VINCENT SEVERINO MAGAT (Quezon City). Renel and Sev were advised by Dr DOMINGO ANGELES and Dr CHITO PROTACIO, respectively. The other graduates were: DONNA MAE DE OCAMPO (Cabuyao, Laguna), ARLENE DIONGLAY (Angono, Rizal), ARMSTRONG MAGNO (Bacoor, Cavite), PAMELA FULE (Los Banos), all under the advisorship of Dr Angeles, and GRACE TABADERO (Manaoag, Pangasinan) advised by Dr Rene Rafael Espino. The plantation crop graduates were MA. CECILIA GATBONTON of Lumban, Laguna (Dr Maria Lourdes Cedo), MAECEL GONZAGA of Sto. Tomas, Batangas (Prof Sev Cuevas) and CLARISSA MANZA of Los Banos (Dr Chito Protacio). From the ornamental crops division, the graduates were EDMUND SAN PEDRO of Nagcarlan, Laguna, RAFONSEL TAN (Los Banos) both advised by Dr Dino Sanchez; ALTHEA ABANO of Los Banos (Prof TJ Rimando) JENNYLYN MALVEDA of Canlubang, Laguna (Prof Amihan Lubag-Arquiza) and BARBARA KATHRINA UY of Los Banos (Prof Susan Aquino-Ong). Also among the graduates was HortSoc alumna MA. LEA HOJILLA-VILLAVICENCIO who received her Master of Science degree in Plant Genetic Resources under the supervision of Dr Renato Mabesa. Lea continues to live in Cabuyao and commutes to work at the National Plant Genetic Resources Lab at IPB. Congratulations, too, to CHITO and Maris PROTACIO. Their daughter, Selena, received her B.A. in Communication (cum laude) at the University of the Philippines in Diliman, and now works in broadcasting. We are pleased to hear from RHODERICK DAWIS who is now in Pangasinan. Derick is now with the Department of the Interior and Local Government in Dagupan City as a Local Government Officer specializing in environmental management. His wife, Jean Paras, is a graduate of UP Baguio and is also with the DILG. ELENA TOME is on study leave from her faculty post at the UP Visayas campus in Iloilo and is pursuing her PhD in postharvest horticulture at Kagoshima University, Japan. We came across Dr RAYMOND BADER and his work while surfing the internet. Ray is a county extension agent with a responsibility for natural resources for the Texas Agricultural Extension Service in El Paso, Texas. Ray's work (and happy face) can be found on http://elpasotaex.tamu.edu/index.html. We were surprised to hear from MA. SUSANA NELLY MITRA who moved to Tenessee about a decade ago after graduating from UPLB. Butche writes that she is now Mrs. Donatoni and has lived in the Escondido-San Diego, CA area since 1995. She went back to school to earn an accounting degree and is now a staff accountant at the Salk Institute in La Jolla, California. EDELWIZA TRINIDAD-DEL MUNDO announces that she has finally caught up with the computer age and is now online and can be contacted at <[email protected]>. Weng has a new job as an agricultural technologist at the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist in Sta Cruz, Laguna with a commodity responsibility for ornamentals. We are also happy to note that AILEEN TEVES-BELANISO over in Valencia, Bukidnon is also on-line! Aileen and her husband Benjie own Dynasty Trading, an agricultural product trading enterprise. Dr PAMELA JEAN LOPEZ-KEMERAIT has moved to Tifton, Georgia where her husband Bob has taken a job as an assistant professor in peanut and cotton pathology at the Rural Development Center of the University of Georgia after finishing his PhD at the University of Florida last year. Pam keeps busy with gardening and taking care of Mia Perrine who turned 2 in May this year! Dr TERESITA DAVIDE-AMORE's family moved to their new house in Honolulu in April. Their new mailing address is: 1309 Wilder Ave#301, Honolulu, HI 96822. ENRIQUE BARILE has moved back to Los Banos after a stint in Davao and Cagayan de Oro last year. Ike continues to work as a Territory Lead for Monsanto. Finally, we note a new batch of HortSoc babies! Early this year, we noted the arrival of Francis Emmanuel (or was it Emmanuel Francis?) to JINGLE and She QUINTANA; then in April 20, the news in Del Monte, Bukidnon, was the arrival of Joaquin Enrique Ulep Rizon (to SARANY and Franz Rizon) and just yesterday, ANA TUICO-PAPAG's daughter Margaret Ann Bettina Tuico Papag was born! Congratulations! |
