OUR PLACE:
10 acres near Sacramento, CA
We were owner-builders for our home. I did the home design; Dave and I did most of the work.
Dave became a master carpenter during this project and I became his trusty helper. He installed 2200sf of ceramic tile floor, the marble countertops and the kitchen cabinets, all trim and lighting, all the plumbing and bathroom fixtures and the finish electrical. We used various subcontractors for specialties like spanish tile roofing, drywall, foundation, etc. We also did all the work on a 3000 sf exposed aggregate patio with inset tiles and decorative concrete banding. We did all our own landscaping and planted over 300 trees. The front landscaping is ongoing and will include a tiled courtyard and a spanish fountain.

The house itself is 2800sf, single story, V-shaped and is framed with 2x6 studs. It has 9' ceilings throughout except for the great room and master bedroom which have vaulted ceilings. The main living area is open plan with a wall of view windows facing the Sierras to the east.

We also erected a 60x24 horse barn, round pen, riding area and 3 turnout pastures with shelters.

A detached shop and work office for Dave is in the planning stages.
