Kentish Town

Walter Horseman lived next to the Old Chapel in Trafalgar Place, Kentish Town Road. This area was known to flood when the River Fleet, which flowed beside Pancras Road, overran its banks. He lived on the west side of Kentish Town Road, because we are told that Joseph Rickards was hanged opposite the house where he committed the murder. A sketch of the hanging is shown in plate 25 of King’s panorama of London.

Four doors away was the Jolly Angler, an ale house kept by Sarah Rose, which was often referred to as the Anglers. When the Vestry met there in 1721, it was called the Compleat Angler. A lane beside it ran down to a favourite fishing spot on the River Fleet. The Jolly Angler was destroyed by fire in 1820.
