Ruffian

This month we are remembering the great Ruffian. Ruffian started just 11 times, finishing first 10 of those times, and the eleventh meeting her tragic death.

The great dark bay filly was by a Bold Ruler son. Reviewer was considered the second fastest son of Bold Ruler, Secretariat being the first. Her dam was Shenanigans by Native Dancer. Both Reviewer and Shenanigans had short, successful careers.
Born on April 17, 1972 at Claiborne Farm in Kentucky. She stood 16.2 by 3 years, had a heart girth of 75 1/2, and weighed 1125. Her stride seemed to make her fly...

Ruffian broke her maiden at Belmont, equaling the track record. She was the 9-5 favorite and in the 9th post position. After that she broke 8 other track records, people called her a "heart breaker" since the fillies she beat were never the same.

The tragic of July 6th, 1974 was the match race. Derby Winner Foolish Pleasure against the great undefeated Ruffian. All of New York wore HIM or HER buttons showing support for the filly Ruffian or the colt Foolish Pleasure. About 30 seconds into the match race the two riders heard a snap, like a twig. Suddenly the announcers were screaming "Ruffian has broken down, Ruffian has broken down!"

The filly was rushed to an animal clinic where leg surgery was performed. After the anistetics wore off, the filly tore her cast off, and was humanly put down at 2:20 am on July 7th. The great Ruffian was laid to rest in the infield of Belmont Park, facing the finish line.

Please take a moment of silence to remember the great Ruffian, and the thought that only death could beat her.
