Depending on the type of horses and the drainage of the paddock area, you have three choices. Ag-lime, Happy Horse Arean Lime, or 1/2 inch crushed limestone with a lot of fines in it. The first and most important thing is what "Your horse likes, I prefer the 1/2 inch crushed limestone with a lot of fines, because it last longer, packs in better, erodes less form water drainage, and if you get a big truckload and you have too much, you can use the rest of it on your driveway. The only "DOWN SIDE" is that some people think the 1/2 inch stones could hurt their horses feet. If that is an important consideration for your horse, then I would recommend Happy Horse Arena Lime, because it has no stones in it and packs in and last just as long as 1/2 inch crushed limestone with fines. The "DOWN SIDE" is that if you have any extra, you do not want to use it in your drive way, or parking lot. Ag-Lime Screenings are sometimes cheaper, but they don't pack in as well, are more dusty, and erode very quickly in the rain. "WARNING" Even thought it may look the same, do not use "CHEAP INFEREOR ILLINOIS LIME" for the "TRAINING LAYER" of your horse arena!!!!! |
