About Horse-Back Riding
Horse-back riding is a skill learnt with time. You can't just go out on a trail one day and say you know how to ride a horse. It is much more complex than that. You need proper training. And plenty of experience, in order to say you are a "Rider".
Some people choose to only occasionaly go riding, others  choose to do it constantly. "Occasional" riders   go on trails most of the time. meaning they slop around on the horse pretending they know how to ride( some of them however know how because they had previouse riding experience). "Constant" riders  often take lessons weekly(sometimes more often than once a week).  They gradually proceed from  "begginner" horses, to the more  complex "green" horses.
Introduction
Types of Riding
There are many types of Riding... Vaulting, English: Hunter, Jumper, Dressage, Equitation... Western: Barrel, hacking, reining...
I for one know only about  the many Enlgish styles of riding.
The difference between English riding and Western riding, is  the western rider  usese mainly hand aids(reins) to steer and command the horse, and the saddle is heavier and has a horn on the front(pommel) that some beleive gives them more stability.
English riding,   is more relaxed, tranquel to do and see. The saddle  is light and  comfortable.  I feel you can do more with english riding, because with enough instruction you can jump cross country courses, or normal stadium courses.  You can doo dressage, equitation, flat courses,  and "musical rides" and much much more.
