31st Annual IHS Workshop, University of Georgia, Athens
May 18-23, 1999

There are lectures on nearly every topic of interest to horn players. The very I attend one on natural horns given by R.J. Kelley.

The usual exhibitors and vendors galore. This is always the best place to shop for music and accessories. This is also the best opportunity to try all the horns on the market.

Recital of twentieth century works for horn. A performance by several Broadway horn players. Evening recital by Russian hornist Andrei Gloukhov.

Most nights are spent at the Athens Brew Pub or at late night jam sessions at the dorm or at gab fests in the lobby.

The dining hall is only a ten minute walk from the dorm, which is handy since there is almost no parking.

Fascinating lectures, seminars and recitals every morning, afternoon and evening.

Field trip to hear the Atlanta Symphony in rehearsal.

We have a private reading session in the basement after supper. One of the favourites appears to be my medley of Take 5 and Unsquare Dance. We join the regularly scheduled reading session shortly afterward.

Lunchtime "Chat 'n' Chew".

Another afternoon concert features the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra horns.

Cocktails before the banquet held downtown. The All College All Star Horn Ensemble performs for our dining pleasure.

It's open mic at the Athens Brew Pub.   Some good, some not so good, but the more we drink the better they sound.

Afternoon recital, Kristin Thelander, Jamie Sommerville

First rehearsal of the natural horn choir.

Recital, NEW YORK PHILHARMONIC HORN SECTION.   WOW!!!! This is the one we've all been waiting for. At the end of a very exciting and demanding concert, four horns led by Phil Myers played the Schumann Konzertstck. A well-deserved standing ovation follows.

An incredible stroke of irony, all five horns return to the stage with their piano accompanist to perform Take Five by Dave Brubek as an encore.   We just read my arrangement of this piece last night!   Totally weird, totally cool!

Lecture, Use of Crooks with John Q. Ericson.

Master Class Phil Myers.

IHS General meeting
There is a presentation on the IHS 2000 in Beijing, China.
IHS 2001 will be hosted by Johnny Pherigo at Western Michigan University.
IHS 2002 will take place in Finland.

Dress rehearsal. The final evening performance is for the particpants. The hosts and other "grown ups" will perform the following afternoon at the close of the conference.

Arrangements have been made for several of the university horn choirs to perform for Sunday services in the immediate area.

All in all another unforgettable experience.
