Monday, November 27, Walter Hall, Edward Johnson Building, University of Toronto
Members of the Toronto Symphony (TSO), University of Toronto (UofT), Students and friends

  • Prelude and Fugue in A minor by J.S. Bach, performed by the large ensemble.
  • A Brief History of the Horn, presented by Drew Stephen.
  • Two Reicha Trios, Op.82, performed by Chris Gongos (TSO), Gary Pattison and Harcus Hennigar (TSO, UofT).
  • Quartet for Horns by Elizabeth Raum performed by The Canadian Horn Quartet, Joan Watson (TSO, UofT), Gary Pattison, Chris Gongos and Harcus Hennigar. This work was commissioned and was debuted at the 30th Annual IHS Workshop in Banff.
  • The Bunny Overture, arr. Gary Pattison.
  • The Schmenge Brothers' Tribute to John Williams, arr. Gary Pattison.
  • Send in the Clowns, arr. Gary Pattison.

After a brief intermission, the entire second half consisted of a performance of the Hubertusmesse. The stage was filled with twenty-five horn players, including members of the faculty, TSO, local professionals, current and past students of the university and conservatory.

I thoroughly enjoyed the evening. It felt like a two hour excerpt from an IHS conference. I was brought down to earth by the fact that I got the jokes about the Schmenges while the majority of those in attendance and even many of those performing just enjoyed John Williams being spoofed in polka time. It was the aprs concert schmooze that rekindled the idea of a Canadian representative to the IHS.

I am inspired to recruit a contingent to head to Kalamazoo.
