Flying Eagle Cent

By 1857, the cost of minting large cents had risen to the point that Mint Director Snowden reported that they "barely paid expenses". The Flying Eagle small cent was introduced in 1856, was only minted for 3 years and, subsequently, are rare detecting finds

Indian Head Penny

The small cent was redesigned in 1859 by James B. Longacre. It was produced in copper(88%)nickle(12%) from 1859 to 1864 and in bronze (95% copper/5% tin and zinc) from 1864 until 1909

Two Cent Piece

The Two-cent piece was struck from 1864-1873 of the same alloy as for the cent. It was the first coin to bear the motto "In God We Trust

Lincoln Type, Wheat Ears reverse cent

Designed by Victor D. Brenner to commemorate the hundredth anniversary of Licoln's birth. The designer's initials appeared on the reverse of only a limited quantity of the cents produced in 1909 as shown on example below. It was the first cent to display "In God We Trust"
