Back in the time that these roads were Indian reservations, it was said that two indians of different tribes fell in love and their parents forbid them to marry. They loved eachother so much that they could not stand to be apart, so they jumped off the Devil's Promenade, and killed themselves. The light is said to be their spirits.
Another is said to be an indian chief who was either killed, or commited suicide on the Devil's Promenade. The light is said to be his spirit.
Another is said to be that of a coal miner who's children were lost in the dark one night. The light is said to be the latern he carries searching for the children he will never find.
One theory is that the Spook Light is only swamp gas. It has been investigated several times by the Missouri Department of Conservation, but still, they have no explanation.
I don't we will ever come to know what this ghost light really is. I think it is something that will continue to baffle mankind until the end of time.
