First of all this band needs no introduction if you follow the underground metal scene, Sadism is one of Chile's top Death Metal bands since 1988 with 5 releases under their belt.Their latest proves that this band ain't going away in no time soon.I had the chance to
get an interview with Javier Menares (Guitar)the newest member of the band. |

ECM:First of all I'd like to say that "Summon"is the best release I heard to date,how has the
metal community in Chile taken to it and what about the rest of the world? |
|
|
|
Javier:Hi Hector,well...I think that "Summon"is the result of 15 yearsof evolution in the
chilean metal scene and people know that.We're greatful with the response of the metal
community here,people recognize the effort and dedication that we has put in this record,
and it's very comfortable knowing that after so many years,people keep suppoting us.We're working hard to expand our music beyond South America,where we know we
have many fans,but we know that to get into the US and Europe's scene is not easy. |

ECM:Your the newest member of the band,how did you get the position?And whats been the largest crowd you played for? |
|
|
|
Javier:Last year,in January the band had almost ready the songs included on "Summon"and
didn't have time to do auditions or advertising,so after the leaving of Raul Salinas,Juan
Eduardo Moore,the bass player and friend of mine,contact and asked me if I was available
to take Raul's place.I said:"What?Sadism?,Of course"hahaha,it wasn't hard for me to take the decision,you know.Since then,I have to say that the largest crowd I've played for is the brazilian one...in Sao Paulo,at the"Setembro Negro Festival"where we had played with
Hate Eternal for about 1500 people. |

ECM:Was the band satisfied with the final production of "Summon"and where did you record it? |
|
|
|
Javier:Yes,definately."Summon"is the best work made by the band.Technically spoken,has
very good sound and the songs are well structured,with the "weight"of Death Metal and,of
course,with"Sadism's Seal".The album was recorded at"Sade Studio"which belongs to our
drummer.Juan Pablo Donoso. |

ECM:What bands did you play for,if any before Sadism? |
|
|
|
Javier:Basically before I joined Sadism,I had been working on solo projects,but the most
important was a band called"Caravan 1973"where I played with other friends{very good ones)that didn't workout.It was a death metal band but with a european style,like At The Gates. |

ECM:What is your view of the Metal scene in Chile? |
|
|
|
Javier:At underground level,I believe that efforts are being made to consolidate this movement,there are emergent bands that are doing something very positive for this cause
and that is valueable.But still I believe that diffusion and record labels are needed to promote the style. |

ECM:The guitars sound very clear on the final production what equipment do you use? |
|
|
|
Javier:We used out Jackson guitars,a Digitech RP-6 connected directly to a Marshall JCM-900 head with Marshall cabinets.We made two takes for each guitar,with two SM-57 mics. |

ECM:I know that in Chile alot of international bands play there,any concerts that stick out in your mind that where great? |
|

|
Javier:Definately without a doubt,Morbid Angel...Fuckn' awesome!!! |

ECM:Who are your most inspiring musicians or bands? |
|
|
|
Javier:I look for inspiration in music which is not related to my metal tastes particulary to
reach my own style.I do it generally listening to Beethoven,Brahms,Wagner that could be called "death metal classics".But I have to say At The Gates marked very much my style to make riffs.I don't know if I can call it inspiration,but I like very much the style that has
James Murphy,Doug Cerrito,Alan Holdsworth and Mike Stern among others. |
