Chapter 8
The Fernandez Family

"Good evening Mr. Fernandez, Mrs. Fernandez," Concha said as she opened the door. "Hi Concha, thanks so much for letting us stay over, we really appreciate it," Mr. Fernandez said. "By the way, call me Carlos, and my wife Alisa if you dont mind. We prefer it," he said. "Sure," Concha said. "I'll have dinner ready in about an hour so just sit down and watch some TV if you'd like," she said as she scurried away.
Meanwhile, Amy and Carly had just come downstairs. "Hi Mom, hi Dad," Carly said to her parents. "Can I watch TV with you? I'm really scared and I-" she continued until her mother interrupted, "Sure honey, you come snuggle up next to me, everything's going to be all right," Mrs. Fernandez said soothingly. The Fernandez family sat down on the leather couch, turned on the huge television, and snuggled up together in one big, fuzzy blanket that was on the floor.
Amy didn't want to watch TV, so she went to her room, pulled out a bead-making kit, and started to make a friendship bracelet for her and Carly to wear. They had only known each other one day, and already they felt like best friends. Amy worked really hard on the bracelets so that Carly would like it enough to never take it off, and remember Amy always, even if she got sent back to Mexico. Amy hoped that Carly wouldn't have to go back to Mexico. Why were the Mexicans doing this? Amy didn't understand. Many rumors would be spreading the next day at school. Amy wouldn't be sure which ones to believe!
She walked downstairs with the finished bracelets. She handed one to Carly. "What's this?" Carly asked. "A friendship bracelet for you. I have one too. So that no matter where you go, you'll always remember we are friends." Amy said. Carly started crying. "Thank you, that's so nice of you! No one's ever done this for me before!" Carly said. "Dinner!" Concha yelled out.
Everyone went to the dinner table and started looking at what delicious foods Concha had prepared. Steak, corn on the cob, little burritos, and the brownies from earlier in the day for dessert with ice cream on top was on the table. Mr. Fernandez was the first one to take a bite. "Mmm! Delicious, Concha! This is the most wonderful food I have ever tasted! How ever did you learn such great cooking skills?" he asked wide-eyed. "Two words. Cook Book!" Concha said chuckling. The room was filled with sounds of laughter. "I'm just kidding, my grandmother taught me. Back in Mexico, where I was born, there wasn't much for an 11-year-old girl to do after school, so I would always go to my grandmother's house and she would teach me how to cook," she said sitting down to eat. "That sounds wonderful, I wish I knew how to cook that well!" Mrs. Fernandez said. Me too, Mr. Fernandez said.
After dinner, and ice cream, everybody sat on the couch to watch "SURVIVOR: Africa." "I hope Kim P. doesn't get booted off, she's my favorite," Carly said. "Mine too!" exclaimed Amy. "Personally, I like Ethan the most," said Mr. Fernandez. "Ditto," said Concha and Mrs. Fernandez.
