Chapter 7
Mexicans

Oh, Carly said as if the world was coming to an end. Love youokbye, she said as she hung up. What was it? Amy asked. She had no idea what was going on. But Concha did. She had just come in from the other room, watching the news.
Carly, honey, dont be upset, theyll be here soon, your parents I mean, so Ill get dinner started and a few blankets and pillows ready in the living room. You guys can stay there- Concha got cut off by Amys panicking words. Whats happening? How come Carlys family is spending the night? Not that thats a bad thing, I just want to know why! she blurted out.
Carly, do you want to tell her or should I? Concha asked Carly. Ill tell her, shes my friend, it may be easier, Carly said.
TELL ME WHAT? Amy asked impatiently. Maybe you two should go upstairs Concha said a bit worried. Ok, lets go, Amy, Amy and Carly walked upstairs. Amy was getting a bit impatient. Ok, were upstairs, WHAT DO YOU NEED TO TELL ME? Amy shouted. Well, you know how Im Mexican? Carly started. Yeah, Amy said. Well, on the news, theres been some Mexican planes flying around, a lot actually, and theyre looking for anyone and everyone whos Mexican to take them back to Mexico. The reason they want to take them back is because the Mexicans who risked their lives to come over the border for better jobs and a better life have found a better life. Most of them became crop-growers. They took the jobs that Americans didn't want. Now they grow delicious, wonderful crops. Mexico just wants those great crops for Mexico, not for America. The Mexicans who are doing this don't like that the people of their country are leaving to do good things for another country, Carly said.
Even if theyre the least bit Mexican, like me, they want them back in Mexico whether they speak the language or not.
So why do you have to stay here? Not that its a bad thing, Im just wondering. Amy asked with a scared and questioning look on her face.
Well, thats mostly because no Mexicans want to go back, all of their, I mean our, friends and great jobs our here in America. So were going to stay at your house for a while. Since Concha is Mexican too, theyll be looking for people like her too.  By the way, Concha said your parents are working all night tonight. Carly said, explaining everything.
Girls! Come downstairs! Carlys parents are here! Concha yelled from downstairs.
