| Have a nice stay here at Carver Junior High School! -Reeba A. Toffenbomeranian Principal And -Nichole R. Choop GIS Its going to be a long day, Amy thought. Brrrrrrrrrrring! The bell to go to homeroom rang. Here we go. Chapter 4 The Girl Amy walked behind everyone to her first class. Most people were already in class, barely ahead of her. She peered through the window of Room 2B. Everyone was socializing, waiting for the teacher to arrive. Amy slowly opened the heavy wooden door. Everyone stopped their conversation and peered over at Amy with wide eyes. Amy felt like shouting out, What are you looking at? But, she didnt. She knew the reason. They were all white and she was black. Amy sprinted over to a desk on the other side of the room, away from everybody. A few minutes later, she heard the door open with a creak. There stood the first black girl she had seen since she arrived. Once again, the entire class stopped their conversation and peered over at the girl. A smile emerged on Amys face. She silently, without anyone seeing her, waved the frightened girl over. Everyone went back to his or her conversations. Um Hello, my name is Amy OHara. Im a new student. I dont really have any friends because Im new in the city. W-Would you like to be my friend? Amy asked with a hopeful look on her face. The girls face brightened. Absolutely! I would one hundred percent love to be your friend! I just moved here from San Diego! My parents are Mexican and I get to go visit my grandparents in Mexico every summer. Where did you used to live? Oh, by the way, my name is Carly Fernandez, Carly responded. Nice to meet you, Carly! Oh my gosh, this is so great that you want to be my friend! I moved here from Wisconsin. Say, would you like to come over after school? Amy asked. Although, my parents wont be home. Our maid will be there. Shes very nice. You can stay for dinner if you like, Amy said. Sure! Id love to come over! Ill go call my house really fast. Carly said with a grin ear-to-ear on her face. Amy sat quietly looking at her schedule waiting for Carly to come back. Its fine that I come over. Oh, Mr. Miller is coming, lets grab a seat. Carly said. Good morning class! A brown-haired, skinny man who was called Mr. Miller said. Good morning Mr. Miller, responded the class. Lets start by taking roll. Aaron Arumuda? he said. Here, responded a chubby young boy. Amy OHara? Carly Fernandez? he asked. Here, Amy said. Here, Carly said. Mr. Miller continued down the list until he was through. |
