The Navy is the only place I ever heard of babbitted bearings. I went to an
aircraft mechanics school in Colorado 70-71 and I have been in aviation since
then but only partly involved in mechanics for the last fifteen years. I also
spent time keeping our family cars running. I don't remember why it was
necessary to scrape them before we could use them. I also don't think food
stamps were available in those days. I remember a friend of mine at another
station in 62-63. He and his wife always ran out of money the last few days
before payday. They used to eat potatoes for dinner the last couple days before
payday. Only potatoes. He didn't want his wife to work outside the home even
though they didn't have children yet. Military pay is not a new subject by a
long shot. My neighbor and good friends son is 19 and enlisting in the U.S. Army
in June. He was telling me they were giving him a five thousand dollar bonus
just to sign. His dad was a draftee and in the 101st air cav. Spent his year in
Vietnam 67-68.
