A Stranger to Tomorrows
May 28, 2001
I am a stranger -
An illegal alien seeking refuge
In the sacred walls of new tomorrows,
Pleading for safety
On these shores of promise -
Seeking a new home,
A place to live without the danger
Of the banging on the door
Splintered from its efforts to
Protect me from
The inner betrayal
Leaving me mercilessly exposed
To guns of anger and guilt
Carried by the soldiers of hatred
Ruled by the tyrant
Of a self trapped
In the backwardness of yesterdays
Using raw force
To obliterate the haunting voices
Of dreams unfulfilled,
Of promises unkept,
Of longings still wandering
the littered streets and alleys
of this place called Me.
I am a stranger.
What will this new land hold for me?
Safety or prejudice?
Will I be able to assimilate
Into the world around me
Or will I need to seek a hiding place
To find the safety
I seek within my pleading spirit,
Search for with my longing heart,
Cry for with the voices
Screaming in my mind
On days like this
When the secret police of anxiety
Are close upon my trail
Seeking, searching
To deport me back into
The hopelessness
Of the land  of Yesterday.
