Sifting through Time
October  13, 2002
Sifting through moments of time
Like sand upon an ocean's shore of dreams
I find my treasures
Washed up on the beach
Flotsam of the changing tides
Of fortune's realization of
What life came to be
Remnants of the life once lived
Drying in the sun
I walk
The sun-warmed sand
Beneath my feet
Trickling through toes
Splayed to grasp balance
Upon that shifting strand
I find
Fragile glass baubles from ships
Shared with others in another time
Knarled driftwood polished
By the dreams pursued
Stranded sand dollars bleaching
To white memories
Along with starfish stiffened
By the sun
Sculptures of what once was
Beautiful even in their stillness
I walk on
There are shells
Cast off remnants
No longer attached to life
Some with changing rainbow hues
Others with sharp edges still able
To cut and wound
Carefully gathered
Now only beauty
Vacant of the pain of past learning
Through the wounding
That once was
The waves roll in
Sand pulled out beneath my feet
By tendrils of water creeping in
To steal the shore
The sands move out to find their way
Once more into
That ocean of dreams
The lightness left behind their passing
Bubbles up within
Dropping my treasures
Beyond the tideline
I run laughing
Into the beckoning waves
