Buy-In

John C. Maxwell uses the term Law of Buy-In. What does this mean?
Herein, if you buy into a persons thinking or vision once, you are most likely going to buy into all other thoughts of his - this irrespective of your conviction.

This does sound outrageous, but put some thinking into it. When you buy into someone, you are doing so out of the immense faith for his thinking. And it is most unlikely to diminish for any further situation. This is precisely why a celebrity endorsement almost always strengthens the marketability of a product. Neither does it suggest that you are unreasonably influenced by the person nor does it mock at your ability to reason. Rather, it is a natural human tendency and almost always proves to be beneficial to the leader as well as the followers.

How? Easy to figure out the reason behind this - you can clearly see the writing on the wall: Your faith forces the leader to come up with a strong vision; inspires him to strive hard for success, and gifts him the courage and will-power to accomplish it. For a vision aimed at welfare of all, success translates into a revolution in general, social well-being in particular.

The phenomenal success and following demonstrated by the Gandhi Principles is a testimony to this. Once we had bought into him, we kept believing in all his decisions and collective vision. And the results obviously have been as good as they could get.

Having made some more than 1000 public appearances, I too found out the applicability of this law. What people had bought into was my oratory skills. But as the law suggests, the important thing was people buying into me. Nothing else matters!

What followed is easily comprehendible using this Buy-In pill. You dont trust a specific skill of mine. You trust me. You trust me to deliver, what ever the situation be. I have found people getting influenced on a variety of aspects. They trusted my leadership skills, soft skills, persuasiveness, management skills, motivations

Without exception, this leads to tremendous responsibility on ones behalf. You just cannot shrug your shoulders off the issues, terming them as either trivial or out-of-scope. Agreed you havent intentionally sold yourself, but what matters is that others have bought into you. And this is all!

This is when you realize that you must try and learn everything that is expected of you. For, each step of yours should be carefully orchestrated, in harmony with the popular expectations and founded on the basic awareness of the intricacies involved. You have no option but to go ahead. And to go ahead, you need all the inquisitiveness and ability to learn everything that goes into it.
Walk on the exponential learning curve and what you will find most difficult is to measure your knowledge trajectory! This essentially brings with it modesty the most crucial quality to keep you going. This grooms you as a person with strength of character

I have addressed concerns - ranging from one of the most critical to clearly the most critical - of many a people. This was possible because they had bought into me. They were willing to accept my advice unconditionally. Such situation obviously demands the hell out of you. You may have to spend sleepless nights to understand the concerns from their perspective. You must spend as much effort as possible into putting yourself in their shoes. Once you succeed, its done. Forget everything else now. Just remember this: Your best bet is to put forward your honest opinion, your intuition the most reliable, and your understanding of the situation as good as the shoes you have put-on. You can never afford to be complacent and sharing the perspective ensures just that. This grooms you as a person, manager, friend

Above all else, you must learn to respect each persons individuality - A quality certainly missing universally. With this comes the gravity of the situation, followed by eagerness to understand and assimilate the problem and ability to get the individual out of it. This individuality gives you the feel of the expectations mounted on you and consequently the drive to fulfill that. This refines you as a person, manager and friend and above all grooms you as a leader

Now get over the feeling of getting it wrong. You just cannot go awry! Be true to yourself and simulate the situation well. Its time you came out with your opinion or advice. Dont go for any advice borrowed from anywhere...

Let your heart speak and speak the contents proprietary to it.

You can feel the intensity of your words trickling down your mouth into the entire body carrying along the tranquil feeling of being honest, truthful and sincere. You will simply love yourself for coming up with words so soothing and yet so practical, so soulful yet so scientific. Please do notice this these words have been quite contagious! Your friend has so readily taken it and appears so much more relieved!

His eyes are so grateful just ignore it lest it harms your modesty, without which you would never have come up with an advice.

Remember, it was your duty to help him out. For one, he trusted you. Rather thank him for making you feel so good about yourself! He has also brought your strength to the fore.

As for material rewards, if you really identify yourself with all these tell me your rates (USD); I am eager to buy into you !
