Our only hope today lies in our ability to recapture the revolutionary spirit and go into a sometimes hostile world declaring eternal hostility to poverty, racism, and militarism.  -Martin Luther King, Jr.

The Hoover History Club is a charted member of the National History Club

Organization. The National History Club Organization is operated by The Concord Review, the nation’s only source for secondary student-written historical

scholarship.  More information about the publication can be found at their website (www.tcr.org).

October 22, 2002

The Hoover History Club hosted a state-wide rally for state

constitutional reform at Hoover High School in the theater.  The event was led by the Alabama Citizens for Constitutional Reform.  Hoover History Club member Henry Tsay, Hoover High School Principal Mr. Gene Godwin, and Hoover City Councilman Kyle Forstman were

featured as contributing speakers during the event.  Dr. Thomas E. Corts, President of Samford University and President of the ACCR, was

featured as the keynote speaker for the event.  At the conclusion of the event, after a question-and-answer session with the panelists, all

participants were encouraged to pledge their support for constitutional reform by signing Reform One, the touring vehicle of the ACCR.

The Hoover History Club is proud to announce that, beginning during the month of November, outstanding students in the Social Sciences Department of Hoover High School will be able to be recognized as “History Students of the Month.”  Teachers within the department will be able to nominate students to the Student Recognition Committee, a student-led division of the Hoover History Club.  One male student and one female student will be selected from each grade. In addition to a written recommendation, teachers may submit a student’s papers or coursework completed over the past month to be evaluated by the committee. For more information, contact N WELTY, Student Recognition Committee Chairperson.

NOMINATIONS FOR NOVEMBER ARE DUE BY NOVEMBER 22, 2002

At the most recent general meeting in November, the Events Committee

Chairman suggested inviting a college-level speaker familiar with world issues or an expert in the classics to a future club event.  Potentially, this could help expand the focus of our club to explore other cultures dissimilar from the American historical content we have experienced thus far.  If you have any suggestions or ideas, drop a note in President’s or Events Committee’s mail slot in Room C228.

The History Club has been invited to become an affiliated member of the Sierra Student Coalition, the student-run arm of the Sierra Club.  The Sierra Club is the country’s most politically active environmentalist group, seeking to preserve the vast beauty of America’s wilderness.  As an affiliate, we would be able to receive access to a wealth of resources, including internships, speakers, political action opportunities, and organized trips throughout the country at very affordable and, in some cases, fully-sponsored costs.   If you believe that our club should become affiliated with the SSC, please drop a note in the President’s mail slot in Room C228.

To Students, Teachers, and Visitors,

Welcome to the home of the Hoover History Club on the world-wide web!  I hope to be the first to invite you to explore this webpage and learn more about Hoover’s newest club and the most recent addition to Hoover’s academic community.

Currently, our nation faces an imperative need for well-educated and active citizens for future leadership at the local, state, and national levels of government.  By creating an organization to promote historical scholarship and discovery at the high school level, the demands of responsible action can be met by students prepared through independent learning and extracurricular participation.  The Hoover History Club is one organization created to meet these needs.

Your contribution is essential to the growth of the club.  I encourage you to join me in the History Club as we seek to secure our positions as responsible citizens in the realm of American freedom.

Sincerely,

Warren Langevin

Hoover History Club President

All club members are responsible for paying their membership dues to the treasurer of the History Club to be recognized as a full member in the organization.  At the first general meeting, all members in attendance voted to set the collection amount at $ 5.00 per member for the first year.  Dues cover speaker expenses, supplies, and refreshments at club events.  Please bring your dues to the treasurer, M SLANOVITS, or to the faculty sponsor, Mrs. Brown, as soon as possible.

Interested in spending a week in Washington, D.C. with dedicated students from around the country?  History Club members are eligible to be nominated for participation in the National Youth Leadership Forum with a week-long focus on either law or defense, intelligence, and diplomacy.  All club members are eligible for nomination by the club leadership.  For more information or to request consideration for your nomination, please contact the president, W LANGEVIN, through his mail slot in Room C228.

PLEASE CONTACT ANY CLUB OFFICER FOR ANY ADDITIONAL INFORMATION.
