| The lost art of shooting. Here's my personal list of the greatest shooter's that I have personally witnessed (basically they had to have played after 1980 for me to remember) who applied there skills for Indiana based teams. Men Steve Alford -- Indiana Hoosiers Larry Bird -- Indiana State, Boston Celtics Reggie Miller -- Indiana Pacers Chris Mullin -- Indiana Pacers Ted Kitchel -- Indiana Hoosiers Jay Edwards -- Indiana Hoosiers Women Shanna Zolman -- Wawasee HS, Tennessee Alicia Ratay -- Notre Dame, European pro Stephanie White -- Purdue, Indiana Fever In my opinion, Steve Alford was the greatest shooter ever. The top four on the men's list are so close it would be easy to argue the case for any one of them. Alford and Mullin had the "purest" jumpshots, but Bird and Miller were better able to get their shoots off under intense pressure in clutch situations. I believe Bird and Miller also developed more range with the NBA 3 point line. The only universal measure of shooting is free throw percentage, and Alford had the best. Free throw percentage also, kept a couple of my favorite IU players off the list: Calbert Cheaney and Randy Wittman. Basically, to be included a player had to have several seasons with a free throw percentage above 85%. I believe field goal percentage varies a lot depending on the strength of the team, offense ran, and individual shot selection. Sadly, shooting is a skill that has been diminishing over the years. Reggie Miller is the only active player on the men's list. The women's teams have produced more skilled players in this area recently as Shanna Zolman, Alicia Ratay and Stephanie White are all still active in college or professionally. And their percentages match or surpass the best of the men. |
Shooting Legends I think it would be wrong not to list these three all-time greats, who unfortunately I was not able to see. Oscar Robertson -- Indianapolis Crispus Attuks Rick Mount -- Purdue Austin Carr -- Notre Dame |
