The rules were simple. Game to 11, by ones. Best out of five. Can’t dribble more than twice in a possession.
The cutthroat one-on-one battles would take place on the blacktop in Camden’s Centerville section, or in the gym of the city’s high school. There were no cameras, so only legendary tales exist about the sessions. Word is, the confrontations were vicious. The sweat and blood, the forearms that were exchanged under the glass - it was all too real. They were epic battles, mad sprints, with the victor claiming bragging rights as the best baller in Camden.
The trash talk? It was relentless. “You’re still my son. I’m still the daddy. You’re too little – got to get your weight up.”
And Dajuan Wagner knew it was the truth. To ever be considered the best, to fulfill the destiny that waited, he had to beat his dad.
Juanny never won a series. Ever. He couldn’t down the one brotha in the hood that mattered – his father. Success sat atop the pedestal that was built by Milt Wagner, the man to which all followers would be compared. Including his blood. The outcomes of those runs weren’t a total surprise. After all, Juanny was ballin’ against a dude who had mad game and was double his size.
Oh yeah, and Dajuan was only 12.
