This controversy has come just months after DeShawn’s SAT fiasco. Regardless of the outcome of this latest investigation, his character has – fairly or not – once again been called into question.
On the verge of the most important year of his young hoop life, DeShawn has raised the bar for his own personal success. Unlike those 7th grade track meets, however, the jump to the L is an attempt he must clear.
Is he ready?
"DeShawn is tremendously athletic," says Dave Fredman, assistant coach and director of scouting for the Jazz. The team, while not issuing a public comment, has chosen to stand behind DeShawn after his altercation. "Obviously, we’re counting on the fact that he has a tremendous upside. He’s got a big body for a 19-year old, but we’re most impressed with his will and ability to work. If he went to school, a team like us couldn’t have drafted him down the road. We’re excited."
By taking DeShawn with their first pick, the Jazz are finally conceding that they have to look beyond the old-school staple of a Stockton and Malone pick-n-roll. The desire to build the foundation of a youth movement has officially reached Utah, and D-Steve is its cornerstone. His unbelievable handle, solid j, crazy hops and yes – controversies – are heading for Salt Lake City. For his part, D-Steve is trying to focus on hoops.
"I like doin’ the little things," DeShawn says. "If I need to get 10 rebounds I’ll do that. If I have to go out and try to score, I’ll do that. Anything coach wants."
