TYPICAL FLOATS FOUND IN A STEELHEADERS VEST
From L - R  5/8" & 3/4" closed cell, home made float from "backer rod", 1/2" closed cell, #3 Drennan, cork & a stubby 5/8" closed cell
There are various types of floats and float materials. Floats are not the typical red and white plastic bobbers that we used to use as kids.In general a float (not a bobber) is used for suspending the presentation in the zone where fish will be holding and is a visual indicator of  the slightest take or violent strike. There are two main types of floats the "wrap around type" and the "straight through" type. The wrap around type (nomally closed cell) are the type I prefer because they are usually the most easily available and won't clean out you wallet when you buy a few, another reason I like using wrap around floats over straight through types is because with straight through floats you need to jam a piece of tooth pick in the float tube to prevent the float from sliding up and down the main line and this seems to be too fidgity. The only drawback to wrap around floats is the line tends to slice into the float when pull too hard when snagged up.
