A tribute to mr. Tung Chee Hwa

Leading a metropolis has never been very easy and in this time of a worldwide economic decline,
it's well known as a very difficult job! Last year mr. Tung Chee-hwa, Hong Kong's Chief Execu-
tive since the handover in 1997, was re-elected for another five year term.

After a great career in business of more than 30 years , mr. Tung had the spirit to accept this huge
challenge and with an excellent combination of Western knowledge and Asian wisdom , he is stee-
ring his city and it's people safely through all kinds of weather.

For many reasons he must sail, like Odysseus , between Scylla and Charibdus : one part of his job
is not only to make the One country - Two Systems possible, but also to prepare the run to 2047.
Another part of his job is to bridge the gap between Hong Kong's colonial past and the present si-
tuation under Chinese government, as the future real bridge between Hong Kong and the mainland.

                                                               ____________________________________

Since mr. Tung took the lead in 1997 a lot of things has changed and not only for Hongkong :
during and after 1997 in Asia and the rest of the world the economy collapsed and hasn't been re-
covered since,a difficult situation indeed for a fresh government starting in a whole new period.
The 9-11 attacks in the United States made things even more worse all over the world and of course
SARS was a dramatic episode in Hongkong's history.
Although everybody with a little bit knowledge of philosophy and human history knows that after
good times bad times can be expected , it seemed to be a complete surprise to most of Hongkong 's
people not to be inviolable for destiny.

A storm of most unkind and sometimes even personal and insulting charges against mr. Tung and his
                government was the result.
Blaming mr. Tung for everything going wrong ( even when it was clear to everyone that no one could
foresee or prevent, like SARS for instance) was daily routine, even in the newspapers.
Maybe Hongkong was too long a pampered British colony, through which it's citizens could behave
like spoiled children, blaming everyone except themselves when things don't succeed immediately.

It takes a lot of time and hardworking to introduce all the measures necessarily for Hongkong's next
and far future but no doubt mr. Tung has the capacities and perseverance to lead Hongkong into it's
                golden era!
