RALLY REPORT- TAIHAPE RALLY
ROUND ONE- Central Region Rally Series
Hi, You are receiving this report because you have either assisted or shown some interest in the efforts of our team. If you do not wish to receive these updates just let me know, [email protected], 025-377921 ,no offence will be taken J
Our Season started last weekend with the Taihape Rally which we had not previously competed in. Our primary reason for attempting this event was to gain experience in the car which had had some modifications that changed its behavior. These modifications were based around the chassis, suspension and steering. As well as basic performance mods like cold air intakes etc.
We drove the car from Hamilton to Taihape to allow any weaknesses to show their head, a throttle spring broke and we retapped the threads from the gearbox to the rear engine mount. We also had some reservations about the viscous coupling differential, whilst the chassis response was much better the car didn’t seem to pull in at the front under power like it used to but we didn’t really have a chance to test it on gravel prior to the event, in any case they are a sealed unit and not repairable. We also have some issues with the syncro’s in 2nd as the change from 3rd to 2nd is possible only if the engine revs are matched accurately.
We started the rally seeded 57th from a field of 105 cars, there were 22 cars in our class (b) 1301-1600cc.
The first stage was a short 5 km stage, We used Silverstone s505 tyres which took a while to warm up but they offered predictable lateral grip, they went off slightly at the end of five, otherwise they were great. Our fears however about the differential proved to be right, the car would spin the inside front wheel oon even gentle corners, gently braking seemed to help share the torque between the front wheels which helped traction slightly.
Stage two was a bit tighter, mainly 3,s 4’s and 5’s and this is where we really got to grips with braking whilst driving out of the corners. Beautiful roads and nice cambers but found if we lifted a front wheel whilst driving over the camber change in the road we lost traction.
Stage three was cancelled due to an accident where both driver and navigator were badly injured. Whilst rallying is a great sport and a great deal of fun for everyone involved in the team, it is a very rare and sad occasion when something like this happens. At the time of writing this both of the crew are still in hospital. Greg Kirkham and codriver Greg Adamson are well known in NZ rallying and it seems doubtful that either will be able to compete again. The Taihape rally is not a fast rally in terms of the speeds reached, it’s quite tight and twisty which I tend to prefer but it does have some big drops off to the sides of the roads in places. I believe their car went down a 100m drop after hitting a tree at a high speed. We toured back to a regroup where concern amongst all teams was high for the crew of the team affected.
We serviced back in Taihape township swapped tyres around and lowered the rear tyre pressures
Stage four we had a brief engine misfire off the start line which took about a kilometer to clear, the stage was a dream , nice flowing road, gentle cambers, the car felt good and despite the misfire we achieved a respectable time.
Stage five – I drove stage five about as fast as I’ve ever driven, I really bit the bullet, felt tidy and fast and we got 15th fastest time on the stage, I was very happy with this.
At the regroup we found we were 7th in class, disappointing I thought but there was only about 20 seconds to first in class so it was perhaps achievable.
It was a fairly hot day and inside the car was even hotter, I drank regularly but began to feel the effects of the heat.
Stage 6 I couldn’t find the rhythm, the car felt different, We had a half spin on a 5 left but I found some pace towards the end of the stage. The heat inside the car was incredible, we thought about pulling one of the side windows out of the car.
Stage 7 was a 36km stage, I like the longer stages because you start to develop a rhythm and that builds confidence, with the car handling the way it was and my confidence with it increasing by the kilometer we caught the car infront but couldn’t pass, then we saw about another 200 meters ahead was another car , the dust meant sometimes we had less than 10 meters visibility, pace notes are great but you still can’t drive in thick dust at pace , so we had to back off, almost to a stop in places, as did the car infront of us, it got dangerous , all that work for nothing, we lost about a minute. We certainly weren’t happy, neither was the crew in front of us, they lost even more time but with gravel comes dust so you live with it.
We serviced, ate bananas and drank water like it was going out of fashion, I was feeling weak and finding it hard to concentrate, I was sick a few times and I figure it was a combination of heat and petrol fumes, We started the stage but almost had to stop, I had a headache, and nausea like never before, Steve drove the touring stages whilst I tried to sip water back, I was all of a sudden freezing cold and wanting to go to sleep. The ambulance people at the start of nine suggested drinking saline solution, coincidentally I had a bottle of contact lens solution in the car , didn’t taste great and it didn’t work either but mind over matter, we finished the stage but it wasn’t a fast time.
The start of nine was a laugh, Touring from stage 8 Steve had the water bottle between his legs and it had leaked all over the front of his overalls, at the start of each stage the navigator has to take the time cards to a desk 50 meters up the road at the control. Steve was standing there looking like he’d wet himself and I was throwing up at the side of the road, I don’t know what people thought but it can’t have been good. Stage 9 was a tight twisty stage with some steep downhill sections, the car leaps from the entry of the corner and sits nicely in the apex, if you have one foot on the gas and the other just lightly on the brakes the viscous diff bites better and out she pulls from the corner. Down hill the car had more weight over the driving wheels. I wanted Steve to drive just so as we could finish, I had no interest in doing the stage
Stage 10 was a spectator stage in the Taihape township, a perimeter road of tight twisting tarmac, on seal it understeered badly but we got a good time.
We finished 36th overall and 7th in class, I think we could have done better and I was initially disappointed with my own performance, individual stage times though tell me that there is hope and the car does have a good level of performance. We need a proper LSD and some gearbox issues resolved and I think a class place in the top half series is possible, only time will tell.
I’d like to thank a few people for their assistance . Motorsport tends to be a fairly selfish hobby in that the driver gets all the credit but I have had a lot of help from the following people.
Jamie Fowler and Erin Luce, They have been an enormous help and have spent many many hours working on the vehicle. Dave Strong (Strong for Honda – Auckland) has helped with parts and valuable advice on both car setup and driving, Sean Elder ( Wally Elders Service Station – Hamilton) for his assistance along with Richard from Silverdale Rd Service Centre and Clive Partington who donated two Silverstone 505’s (tyres) along with a whole heap of mechanical advice and late night phone calls. The car is not painted in fact it is completely covered in signwriting vinyl, note : this takes bloody ages to do, but it’s cheap and light, the graphics were designed by Emma Mathews a graphic artist from Australia.
Sign writing was provided by Rilee signs in Auckland, we also have a windscreen banner promoting www.onlinemotorsport.net a great website that’s worth checking regularly.
I’d also like to thank Steve Schwartz for Navigating, Steve sat beside me back in 1994 when I had the Escort but found it’s a whole new game reading pace notes, Pace notes have their critics but I believe it makes the event safer and it makes for more of a team effort.
So that was our event, in May we hope to do the Taranaki Rally. It’s a Tarmac rally and requires a different approach; we will let you know what happens!
