Midnite Vultures

To Main Lyrics

Beautiful Way

                Beautiful Way

        Searchlights on the skyline
        Just lookin' for a friend
        Who's gonna love my baby
When she's gone around the bend?
5 Egyptian bells are ringing
        When it's her birthday
Sweet nothin', I'm talking about you
There's a hurricane blowin' your way

        Ooh such a beautiful way
10 To break your heart
        Ooh such a beautiful way
        To break my heart

        There's someone calling your name
        It's driving you insane

15 You were wearing that stained raincoat
And your umbrella was a tangled mess
You were washed up on the glittering shoals
Looking for another crime to confess
You bribed yourself out of a place in the sun
20 But you had some change to spare
So you said you wanna spend it on me
And shook the blues out of your hair

        Ooh such a beautiful way
        To break your heart
25 Ooh such a beautiful way
        To break my heart

        There's someone calling your name
        You're gonna miss that train

Analysis: This is about a time when Beck had to break up with a girl. It starts out with him looking for someone to love her when after he breaks up with her. He also warns her of what's about to happen ("there's a hurricane blowin' your way")

The chorus says that ending the relationship will break both their hearts. She knows that there's someone else that's right for her, and she's torn between the two. She loves the one that's wrong for her, and the right one loves her.

The second verse is about after they broke up. She didn't take it well and was unprepared for it. She was trying to blame it all on herself, and convinced herself that she could never be happy. By going out with him, she was sacrificing her success. She thought it would make her feel better if she could stay with him and try to give more, but it was too late.

He still loved her but couldn't stay because he knew they weren't right for each other. He didn't want her to miss the opportunity to be with the person who's right for her.
