Swimming... A Sport?

I was asked to write this article a while back, about whatever the hell I wanted. I finally came upon the fact that as far as our school goes, the OHHS Falcon Swim Team has little to no recognition. Actually, I knew this before I even joined the team. As I had known swimmers from the past and watched the meets with nobody there but a few parents and siblings. Hell, outside of football, basketball and maybe baseball, no sport in our school or most anywhere gets recognition. Probably half or more of our school or town doesn't even know we have a swim team. The saddest thing is, nobody cares or ever does anything about it. I'm not going to write this article about what you should and should not do, but come check out a swim meet sometime. Though they can be somewhat warm and humid, they aren't too bad to just check out for a little bit. I mean, what can the lady's complain about...

Anyway, you may be thinking, "I don't give a damn about the Swim Team!" Though you may not know much about us, the team is a compilation of lazy bastards and more lazy bastards, and the occasional "Hard Ass", and all of us just want to have fun while swimming. The swim team is probably the most diverse team I can picture our school having. It has had and has all different kinds of people. The closest comparison of diverse individuals to swimming would likely be wrestling, but it is pretty much made up of hard asses(not saying thats bad) who want to just be buff and starve themselves to lose a lb. or two. Swimming has had the average guys, the popular guys, the potheads, the alcoholics, the badasses, the goody goody's, and a majority of the OHHS Caste mixed in throughout (pretty much excluding the skank and real prep.)

I've been in a pool more of my life than I have been in any other activity, and I know a lot about it. Its pretty much my second home in winter during our season. As any swimmer will tell you, its pretty fun (when not freezing your ass off in the pool or having crazy practices) and we do screw off a lot. Some people may think we take Swimming way to seriously from overhearing us discussing meets or such in class. This is pretty much the opposite of most the teams outlook. What the public doesn't see are the bus rides, the meets, the idiocy in practices, and the fun that is probably the main reason half the team is still here. Hell only half the team is still here...! Anyway, the majority of swimmers (20% of the team) that work their asses off hold the team together, while the rest of the swimmers do a fine job of supporting the team too. An anonymous person (works on this site...Mouthful of something?) is one of those lazy bastards I mentioned earlier. He was a pretty good guy to have on the team, and brought a lot of spirit with him. The Falcon's may not have had the most team enthusiasm (see Falcon's Girls Swim Team), but we were and still are a tight knit group. Though we all have our own groups inside the team, we all know what we have to do and do it together.

As this guy I was speaking of...who might have quit the team for some unknown reason just recently, but while in swimming he knew his job. He may not have been the hardest worker or fastest swimmer, but he defined our swim team. A bunch of guys, who liked to have fun and enjoy themselves through swimming, with the occasional or recent pissing off of our coach. Who I must add has to be the best coach for our schools sports. Then theres the occasional quarrel between teammates, or other things, but we pretty much have a great time while swimming, and winning.

There are the better, good, and what must be said, somewhat shitty swimmers, but we all average out to be a relatively good overall team. The majority can hold their own, and the shitty swimmers usually become good swimmers if given the time and put in the effort. As for me being an upper classman, I am more of the serious swimmer who works harder in practice then some others and has to try and show the freshman whats up. We all have our times, and notions, but it seems until now everyone's always stuck with it.

For people who don't know anything...the past 4 years the Falcons have won the ISC Championship, and numerous Non-Conference Meets. We have gone undefeated the past years I've been on the team, this being my 3rd season. As not many of our classmates know, we pretty much kick everyone's ass! This season, though, seems to be a more interesting one. To point out a few highlights: Numerous swimmers and divers quitting, with us still winning all of our meets (though having a very close one this past Thursday against Oscoda, 97-83). Also, our insane coach becoming more serious and seemingly going crazier than we thought possible at times earlier in the season, though he has now lightened up somewhat over vacation. A week or two off from the team and he seems to have come back to just being the devil and nothing worse. Hmm... he has vacation off, and he probably partied a majority of the time, comes back and seems somewhat less insane...wonder why...?

Well, in closing I'd just like to say to anyone who doesn't know much about the swim team to check us out sometime. The pool is a place for swimmers to kind of hang out, since not many others wander down there much. So if you ever have the chance stop on by and check out a meet, DO IT!
