Oblivious to the Obvious By: "Anonymous" I know the title of this article sounds a little harsh, that most of you can't wait to read this article because you think it is going to be about some nerds, or people we call "fags", but it is not, it is about people that many of us look up to, and may have never looked at them in the perspective that I am about to present to you. I don't know about all of you, but every Monday, when I walk through the doors of OHHS, I hear a lot of senseless chatter. A lot of it I find kind of offensive. Most of the conversation that is going on Monday mornings are about the previous weekend, usually about a party, or sometimes just about the speaker and a friend or two. You hear people bragging to their friends, about subjects that is kind of pathetic to be bragging about. I can see someone telling everyone about the awesome shot they had at the basketball game on Friday night, or how they aced a test, or got a promotion, but not about how wasted they got the prior couple of days. I hear comments like, "Wow man I got hammered Friday night," or "Shoot, I'm out of weed, I smoked it all this weekend." When I hear these obsene comments, I almost feel sorry for the person who said the phrase. And the rest of the week, all they talk about is how they can go out and party, and get blown out of their minds, because they don't have to work the next day, even though that probably wouldn't stop them anyways. They act like Alchohol, and Drugs are oxygen; they can't go without it. They would give up hundreds of dollars just to enjoy this short, dangerous, feeling of extacy. They say their not addicted, or don't have a drinking problem, but when you ask them to go the whole weekend without smoking one joint, or taking one drink of their favorite beer, they, will never do it, not in a hundred years. They do all of this without even thinking of the possible longterm effects of their messed up habbits, which to me is unbelievable, I mean, we've grown up listening to what this stuff could do to us, and it has been battered into our heads hundreds of times, but still nobody believes it could happen to them. Even more amazing than that, is that in my three years in highschool, there has been one alchohol related accident, nearly taking two of the most popular kids in our schools' lives, and one drug incident, that did take a kid's life. Yet everyone continues to do this, drink and smoke without ever thinking that in a wink of an eye, they could be dead, or be paralysed for the rest of their lives. Not mentioning lung and liver cancer, that can lead to many slow, painful deaths. I'm not perfect. People very close to me, who I used to look up to, do some of these very things, and for that reason, I no longer look up to them.
Hopefully this article has inspired some of you to think twice before taking a drink. |
