Reintroducing Pattern & Colour - Ladies Magazine
Articles
In recent years, neutral room schemes have been at the forefront of popular interiors thus people have shied away from both colour and pattern, instead favouring chic understated and minimalistic interiors with texture playing a key role. Instinctively, when the eye is deprived of colour, our other senses kick in ,hence the autonomic reaction to pick up and feel the softness of a cashmere throw or suede cushion.

However, fashion  trends dictate that both colour and pattern are once again increasing in popularity, although many people may be lacking in confidence or unsure as to the best way of reintroducing them back into their homes.

Start gradually, youll be amazed what an uplifting effect adding a few bright cushions or throws will have on your overall scheme. As you gain confidence , introduce colour or pattern to one wall only. This can be as effective as changing the whole colour scheme. Remember, you can easily re-paint it the original colour if you dont like it!For the more adventurous ones, try wallpapering one wall in an exciting new floral design. Neisha Crossland (Paint and Paper Library)  has some wonderful and individual designs such as her anemone print.Try using it as a focal point behind the bedhead wall in your bedroom.

Trend forecasters predict that although Seventies retro influences and ethnic designs will remain popular, well see a re-emergence of an altogether softer look , inspired by chic, faded  French interiors and the glamour of the classic Hollywood era.Bedrooms can be romantic without being  fussy silk eiderdowns like granny used to have are immensely popular at the moment and add instant glamour.

Avoid using vast amounts of fabric and fussy gathers.Use florals in  flat panels letting the patteren itself become the focus of the design. Eyelet headed curtains are popular because the fabric is drawn back into neat concertina folds , in contrast to the voluminous gathers of the Eighties when florals were last as popular.

You may have always loved pattern and colour,Cath Kidston , a highly talented individual has created a succesful worldwide business from  her passion for Fifties florals and polka dots. Her mail order catalogue is crammed full of delicious fabrics, china and a wide range of accessories such as ironing board covers , handbags and even a funky floral cover for your I-mac!

Todays look is personal and eclectic, complementary rather than coordinated.Forget matching wallpaper borders, source the decorative elements from more then one store, keep favourite personal treasures and work around them., and most importantly of all
