halcyon farm recipes
contributed by Susan Loomis, along with her comments & memories
Mom sent these recipe cards along to me, written in Wadah's (or Ma's) own handwriting, discolored by age and the smoke from the 4 packs of Lucky Strikes that Pa smoked every day. These are just a few of the treats that we all remember eating, sitting in the kitchen at the farm, basking in the warmth from the stove and the love that this food represented.

These hermits are the ones we adored.
Biscuits were Ma's specialty -- always dipped in butter of course -- how else? SO good.
Pound cake was made at Christmas ONLY and hidden, wrapped, on a shelf in the butler's pantry. It was costly to make & a treat. I remember dying for a piece & was warned severely by WahWah not to touch!
I tried to find a Pancake recipe, but cannot. I believe Wadah said:
Take a cup of soured milk or buttermilk, beat up with one egg, 1 teaspoon soda and tablespoon sugar. HURL together with enough flour to make a runny, bubbly batter. Fry on a hot griddle & serve with butter & syrup. Blueberries or quahogs can be added (not together!) -- omit the sugar if adding the clams.
These are like crepes! My favorites! We had them for luncheons.
Here is Wadah working on the frosting of Mom & Dad's wedding cake, and finis!
