My shop is currently outfitted with the following machine tools:

 
Like most beginners, I assumed that the essence of a shop was its mill or lathe, and pined away for bigger and faster and more automatic. Now, I know better. That's why my more recent purchases have been measuring, layout, and reference equipment. Tooling isn't sexy, but then neither is a cherry 1966 GTO without wheels and tires... Have you priced a Bridgeport-sized rotary table lately? Desktop machining is affordable machining.
