Developing Independent Study Habits
At some point in your homeschooling, you will decide that your child needs to learn how to study independently. But how do you encourage independent study habits, while still making sure they get the one-on-one they need?
At the beginning of the week, I give my 10 year old a color-coded copy of his schedule. The things in green, he does himself (with the understand that if he is having problems, he comes straight to me.) The orange are things he needs to do with me. He can take his list and his books to his room and complete the green things there, if he wants to (sometimes he does, sometimes he stays with us at the table)... as long as they are done by the end of the "school day." Probably next year (he will be in 5th grade next year) I will wait till the end of the week for him to "turn in" the work, but at this point, I prefer daily.
