Three methods will be honored: the Latin stress, pitch stress, and quantity stress.
The Latin usage: stress on the penult (second-last) syllable if it long, otherwise the antepenult (third-last).
The pitch usage: stress on the accented syllable. The type of accent mark indicates the variation in pitch.
The quantity usage: prolong the syllables that are long (two beats) and running over more rapidly those that are short (one beat).
A syllable can be long by nature, long by position, or short. If the syllable contains a long vowel or diphthong, then the syllable is long by nature. If the syllable contains a vowel followed by two consonants or by a double consonant (dz, ks, and ps), then the syllable is long by position. Otherwise the syllable is short. |
