That's very much like asking how people become rich. :) There are many reasons.
For some, they indulged in drugs or drink, became addicted and use all of their money to buy these things. I'll not lie to you. I do not, however, believe that this is the main cause of homelessness. I think drinking and drugs are more of an effect of homelessness than a cause.
Some homeless people are disabled, either mentally or physically. Some are disabled by serving their country in the military!
Some fell on hard times, especially since September 11th. They may have been one financial disaster away from being homeless. They may have lost their jobs or been kicked out of their apartment. Maybe they had a medical problem and spent their savings on doctor bills.
They may have chosen to run away from their families, possibly to escape abuse. They may even be women choosing homelessness over an abusive husband.
