The transit camp is a response of the Port August Council wanting to keep Aboriginals, like the Pitjantjatjara, out of town. The camp is about three kilometres from town in sand dune country and part of the Umeewarra Mission, previously known as the Davenport Community. The camp is a safer and healthier place than the streets of Port Augusta. The Aboriginals used to camp on the beach in town, but this has been redeveloped. |
