6/21/06 Markos thoughts on Some Girls, Television, Brazen Hussy, RHCP Pt.2 (music review)
OK, you like your punk-metal fast and furious? Kinda like a slightly more metallic Dwarves? Then check out Some Girls new record on Epitaph called Heavens Pregnant Teens. The sticker says they feature members from The Locust, Give Up the Ghost, The Plot To Blow Up the Eiffel Tower and Unbroken. Honestly I’ve not heard of any of these bands, but no matter. This record is quite the ass-kicker. If you lop off the repetitive 9:09 final track, its 12 songs in less than 16 minutes. And that’s how Marko likes his rock and roll: loud, hard and fast. They also cover Public Image Ltd.s Religion II, and while I was ready to hate it, its too shabby. Neither is this album. Check it out.
This weeks favorite classic LP is Televisions Marquee Moon. What can you say about this record that hasn’t been said. It came out on Elektra in 1977 and blew me away, plain and simple. The piercing guitar interplay between Tom Verlaine and Richard Lloyd is spectacular and the songs are nothing short of amazing. The ten and a half minute title track is simply a staggering piece of music. In addition, this LP features classic Television tracks like Venus, Friction and See No Evil. I remember a lot of punks slagging TV because their songs were too long, but that’s bullshit, good people. And fuck the bitching about Verlaines voice too. This album is a classic in every sense of the word. I just wish they’d recorded a proper record before original bassist Richard Hell left to join Johnny Thunders Heartbreakers.
OK, last time I was babbling about how much I was diggin’ the new Chili Peppers album. Now its three weeks later I haven’t listened to it in two weeks. All of a sudden its no better than the last few Peppers records. Not their worst mind you, but nowhere as good as the first two or three LPs.
I saw Brazen Hussy again this past weekend. As they were playing I was trying to figure out why I like this band so much. I couldn’t come up with an answer. I just know two things: 1) they kick my ass each and every time I see them, and 2) I want a CD with every goddamn song they know on it.
OMG, Im looking at the Sailfest weekend band lineup and freaking out. Were talking Fatal Film, Ringers, Paul Brockett Roadshow Band, Low-Beam, the Swaggerts, the Rivergods, the Reducers, the Liz Larsons and the Can Kickers! All in three days? All I gotta say is bring a change of underwear.
