In the Old Testament God made a covenant with Abraham. This covenant with Abraham is fulfilled in the son of Abraham, Jesus Christ. The title son of Abraham is given to Jesus Christ in Mathew 1:1
The book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.
This title is very important, in so far as it links both the Old and New Testament together.
Abraham's son was Isaac. The title son of Abraham is given to Jesus to remind us that He is the Sacrifice. He is God's blessing and in Him all are blessed.
All who belong to God's family of the faithful are blessed in Jesus Christ.
Jesus Christ is also the son of David (see 2 Samuel 7: 8-13).
Jesus Christ is our David or God's Beloved. The covenant God made with David is fulfilled in Our righteous son of David!
Just as David's Solomon was a temporal King- Jesus Christ is Our eternal king. He is the builder of God's house or church and all His work glorifies God's holy Name.
Let us enjoy the book of Mathew for it portrays Jesus Christ as the promised Messiah, God's righteous sacrifice and King!
Genesis 12
1 Now the Lord said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy kindred, and from thy fathers house, unto a land that I will show thee:
2 And I will make thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing:
3 And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse them that curse thee: and in thee shall all the families of the earth be blessed.
The challenge is set before us. Let us respond gratefully and look to Jesus Christ as God's all-sufficient blessing! He will make our name great in God's sight.
