Many psychologists concur that the sex is one of the primal desires of the human race, and must be satisfied in some respect to attain and prolong health. Even at a common high school level, Maslows Hierarchy of Needs, and the prevalence of the sexual necessity is discussed (11), though no profound meaning can be ascertained within the confines of the pervasive ignorance rampant in public education, but that requires another dissertation. There were two major studies conducted in the 20th century that considerably reduced the taboo effect of American sexual practices, one by biologist Alfred C. Kinsey and others, and the other directed by husband and wife William Masters and Virginia Johnson. Kinseys analyses determined the extent to which Americans participated in acts that had hitherto been unmentionable in public, with shocking honesty, while Masters and Johnson were most prominent in their investigation into the sexual response cycle. Kinsey, of Indiana University, uncovered the banality of self- gratification and premarital intercourse in both men and women, and can almost be credited with desensitizing the public to sexual candor (22). Masters and Johnson undertook a different route, and decided to put an effort into exacerbating the scientification of sex, with their sexual response cycle, their account of the four stages of intercourse, which does not need to be expanded upon (16). Clearly, the greater part of the musical accomplishments of the last four decades have been sexually motivated, thrusting bedroom behavior further into the limelight than even Freud could have imagined. The band Radiohead presented the lyrics: I wannabe wannabe wannabe Jim Morrison in their song Anyone can play Guitar. Morrison, the late lead singer of the Doors was a notorious deviant in the sexual arena, as he alluded in the Doors People are Strange, in which he chanted: When youre alone, women seem wicked, when youre unwanted. When youre strange. In that incantation, he blatantly expresses his desires, and also in L.A. Woman and Light My Fire. Another band with similar inspiration is Blue yster Cult, with such hits as Im Burnin for you and Dont Fear the Reaper in which the songs presumably female subject is urged to remain amorous with the vocalist in the face of danger, since Romeo and Juliet are together in eternity Dont fear the Reaper, baby, take my hand. Mediocre literary reference, but an excellent overture two and a half minutes in. A more contemporary piece of evidence is the song What I Got by Sublime in which the late Brad Nowell repeatedly insists that: Lovin is what I got and it keeps him from resorting to violence when he is financially insecure and unsure about his future or family issues. Apparently the right kind of love is a powerful panacea to some. On to a more obscure musical realm, German industrial heavy metal, and the band Rammstein with the title track of their first major success abroad, Sehnsucht, which means longing. While some of the songs lyrics are lost in translation and most of the rest are unfit to print, the idea is discernable, in that the singer holds a similar opinion to that of Sublime, but expresses it far more graphically: Sex cures all. Sex is everywhere these days: Madison Avenues consistent vindication for racy advertisements is sex sells. How true. With the ubiquitous insinuations of imagery regarding reproductive propensities, it is natural to expect the deviations that exist today, such as homosexuality, necrophilia, Kama Sutra, chronic masturbation and other non-descript practices. The ability to tolerate such behavior is a skill that many of us do not have the patience or the moral elasticity to accept, and therefore one should keep with the archaic axiom If you dont have anything nice to say, dont say anything at all. |
