After an undisturbed evening and night with his wife, Cpt. Burke meets his
First Officer in his ready room the next morning. They first discuss the new
additions to the crew, then Burke thanks Nova'Song for her efforts in
protecting the ship and his daughter. He also tells her that she is being
promoted to full Commander. Later, the CO and XO of the newly arrived
Marines report in. Burke welcomes them and invites them to attend the next
senior staff meeting.



Ensign Gabriel Goose is called to the captain's ready room where Burke
officially makes him bridge medic. Goose is not certain about his ability to
fulfill all expectations, and the captain has some well-meant advice for
him. On the Bridge, he feels that the presence of Nova'Song has a calming
influence on him, and he likes it. Later, during some time off, Gabriel is
in his quarters thinking about his life as a loner and about what the
captain had said to him. He realizes he has to come to terms with his
weaknesses and takes one step in the right direction by destroying an chip
with an illicit holoprogram on it.



Nova'Song is happy to receive the promotion. After she says so to Captain
Burke, they talk about his daughter. She informs him of how much his
daughter has been accepted by the crew and what that means in terms of
protection for the child. At the senior staff meeting later that day,
Nova'Song receives congratulations from her fellow officers and then begins
the meeting by introducing the new crewmembers.



LtCmdr Kallesin n'Galeda reports during the meeting that the Science
department is still monitoring the Athel Loren nova through buoys. He
informs the officers that the Gerlayti devices and Guardian technology
gathered in the Athel Loren system have been examined and found to be highly
advanced of Federation technology. At the current time none of it can really
be understood or recreated. Kallesin himself is studying the Guardian
programming, hoping to develop better holoprograms and better AIs from it.

Hanson and Syllis identify a likely culprit to be Smiley - an engineer
named David Karides who was denied entrance into Starfleet Academy. There
best guess for now is that Smiley is hiding in the back-up core and both
officers go there to find the saboteur and ask a few nice questions.
