                                      Synopsis

Reece McHenry (Sam Shepard) falls in love with seamstress Carol Fritzsimmons (Diane Keaton) while his wife is in a coma in hospital. When the relationship remains stagnant Carol tests Reeces commitment by going to look after her terminally ill sister in Canada. She wants him to commit further by saying shes the love of his life but he cannot do this, just saying that she is his best friend. Her daughter Katherine (Diane Lane) and his son Tom (Robert Patrick) also fall in love. Will their relationship meet the same fate as their parents? On the cover it says, Sometimes your only chance for love comes once.
                                            My Thoughts

I dont know if Id have called this movie The Only Thrill. The title would suggest that it was thrilling which it was not.  Maybe it could have been titled, Loves Chances Lost or Grab Love While Its Here or something like that. Well, theyre awful titles too but you must catch my drift!?
Its a Bridges of Madison County type movie I think but I never did see that film -  well thats the impression I get. It has a slow story line showing the relationships between two single parent families over almost four decades from the 1960s to the 1990s.
I wouldnt have given this movie a second thought if it werent for Robert Patricks name in the line up. The first time I saw it I had to wait up until 2 am to catch it on Showtime. Also, being an X-Files fan, my daughter saw his name in the credits and alerted me to the screening. (Thanks Nellie)
I just read back over my previous comments and you must think I didnt enjoy this movie. I did. I remember back to the first sleepy time I viewed it and it was slow going. The second time I was more alert and I began to see its virtues. Now Ive seen it about six times and have fawned over it each time since then.
There are two distinct sections - the relationship between Reece and Carol and the love between their offspring Tom and Katherine. I have heard in other reviews that theyd wished there were more sequences of the parents but I could watch a whole movie of the interactions between Tom and Katherine. Theres no accounting for taste.
RP involvement
RPs lovability in this movie is very much on a par with his character in A Texas Funeral. He is so cute, gorgeous and sexy.
The first time we get the hint of our RP character is in the 60s when hes 15. We hear his voice but dont see him.
Hes 27 when we first really see him rather than just being talk between Reece and Carol. This is where he meets Katherine for the second time (she thinks its her first) and he falls in love. This is the girl of his dreams this is the end of the prey but she doesnt think the same way. Shes attracted to him but cant stand still long enough to settle down. Hes devastated when she leaves him to pursue an acting engagement in Tennessee. How can this gal leave this gorgeous man?

The next time frame is 12 years later. He is 39 and owns a chain of video stores. His hair looks better here in fact he looks hot! He meets up with Katherine again. Shes been married a few times and yet hes been unmarried because she was his only true love.

The last time frame is 6 years later when RP is 45. Hes still unmarried but this time needs some coercion to ask the love of his life to stay. Love the grey streaks here. He is just so sweet. How could she not want him from the start?

Memorable Scenes
* The best female body part scene
* Canoodling with Katherine in the theatre the day he meets her (again) while the two woman on screen are talking about their sex life.
* Not so memorable -  when Katherine said she was leaving for Tennessee and didnt want Tom to follow her. How could she leave such a gorgeous man?
* Toms opening up a bottle of wine telling Katherine about the time they first met (when he was 15) and she hadnt remembered. Theyd made out in the woods like a couple of banshees.
* When Katherine spits pool water in his face (that reminded me so much of Doggett in Within )
* The way he looks at Katherine I want him to look like that at ME!!

Memorable Lines

Katherine:  How come you never married?
Tom:  You.  (adorable voice)
Katherine: You knew me a week.
Tom:   What can I tell you!   (another melting smile and adorable voice)
Katherine: The craziest thing I ever heard.

Katherine: So whos your latest lady?
Tom:  You.
Katherine: You should be married. Have a whole family by now.
Tom:  Yeah, theres this old Robert Mitchum movie, its on TV and hes some detective or something, The woman hes with is talking about her family.. and he says, I never married. That line packed a wallop to me, maybe no-one else in the world got it.. Whos your latest?
Katherine: You.

Katherine: I always went for you but I could never sit still long enough.
Tom:  To love me?    * major melt*
Katherine: You have always loved me, havent you?
Tom:  Since I was 15.     *ahhhhh sighs*
.

End Thoughts

This is a must see for all Robert Patrick fans. I would also suggest buying it as youd probably watch it more than once. RP is so sweet in this heart-warming story.  I bought my new copy through videoflicks.com.
