March Lesson - The Eiffel Tower The Eiffel Tower in Paris, France stands at 300 meters (986 feet) and according to the Muggles, was begun in 1887 and finished on March 31st 1889 (2 years, 2 months and 5 days) for the World Expo, commemorating the centenary of the French Revolution. It consists of 3 levels and is made up from 18,038 pieces of metal weighing 7,300 metric tons, and has 1,665 stairs to the top. In its lifetime it has been 6 different colors. Of course for the wizarding world..we all know that it wasn't built for the French Revolution at all, but was built as a joint project between the French and English Ministries Of Magic. A treaty was actually signed between the two ministries. And why did we sign a treaty...well because of all the ghosts. The Eiffel Tower is actually a collection area for all those "troublesome ghosts". You know which ones I mean...the ones that can't keep to themselves, the ones that go 'bump' in the night when you're trying to sleep, etc. Well, apparently the French were having the same problem with their ghosts (nothing to do with all the beheadings they carried out through the 18th century of course!!) Anyway...we made a pact, the English Ministry would ship them, under watch of Aurors, in a glass jar (with an unbreakable charm on, don't you know) to Paris, where they would be unleashed into the Eiffel Tower, a place made of iron (which is a natural substance used, in a smaller quantity of course, in many concealment potions and charms) The obnoxious ghosts could not escape due to being "drawn" towards the iron. As noted before the tower has three platforms: The 1st level - is at 57 meters For Muggles: it is used for conferences, there is office equipment, a stage, etc. There is also a restaurant for them called Altitude 95 (because its 95 feet above sea level) For witches and wizards: it is drop off point for Aurors. It works well because if any Muggles accidentally wander through to the magical side...all they still will see is desks etc. Ghosts are signed over here, receipts given. These receipts are needed for any living relative wishing to visit deceased relatives/ghosts. The Second Level is at 115 meters For Muggles: it is a really expensive restaurant called Le Jules Verne. It is situated in the middle of the tower...so as to try and keep the noise of loud ghosts away from the Muggles....it has its own elevator. For witches and wizards: it is the viewing area for ghosts deemed level 1-3. (on a level of 1-5, one being the least trouble....five tending to be your poltergeists and real trouble!) The 3rd level - is at 276 meters For Muggles: it is an 18-meter climb which ends with a breathtaking view of Paris. There are two levels - one outdoors and the other indoors. The top platform also has a bar, souvenir shop, and the (recently restored) office of Gustave Eiffel.(the man who built the tower) For witches and wizards: it is a viewing area for ghosts deemed level 4 and 5. On site auror offices can also be found here, staffed by both English and French aurors in case of an escape attempt. Why, you may ask, was it built in Paris? Why not somewhere in the countryside? Well, where would you hide an 986ft building...but in the middle of the city!! And with over 6 million Muggles climbing the tower each year and each paying a price...we are guaranteed wages and the upkeep of this beautiful monument! |
