April Lesson - Easter Island Easter Island can be found in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, 3700 kilometers from the Chilean mainland and is the most geographically remote place on earth. In Spanish Easter Island is known as Isla de Pascua, and as Rapa Nui, Te-Pito-Hena or Mata-Ki-Te-Rani, in Polynesian. It is a triangular shape made up from three volcanos called Poike, Ranu Kau, and Maunga Terevaka, all of which are inactive. The best known volcano is Ranu Kau, where the ceremonial village (for muggles who lived on the island ) of Orongo used to be, and where the Moai statues were made. The Moai statues are what make Easter Island so special to Muggles. On average, the Moai stand 13 feet high and weigh 14 tons, and are human heads-on-torsos carved in the male form from rough hardened volcanic ash. Muggles flock to see them...to try and work out what they may be. They have been in place since at least 1722 as far as muggles are concerned..for that is when Admiral Roggeveen, found the island on Easter Day. Muggles believe the statues are from an ancient people (well they are half right...Goblins go back a long way) and that they are sacred objects to give up sacrifices to. Well, the truth is that they have actually been around since 400AD (when they were actually carved by Goblins) to scare any natives away. The Goblins had found precious and semi precious stones as well as seams of gold within the volcanic ash. This explains why the stones are only in the image of men because in those days (muugle) women were not the hunters and so the stones were only carved in mans image. Muggles would also like answered why there are no trees present on the island...this can also be answered by the fact that Goblins used them all to build mines and mineshafts. Today (after all the Goblin wars) wizards/witches are allowed to work as treasure hunters on Easter Island...but only if employed by Gringotts...any illegal treasure hunters will find themselves in Azkaban Fortress. |
