February Lesson - Atlantis

Over 11,000 years ago, there exsisted an island nation located in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean populated by a noble and powerful race. The people of this land possesed great wealth thanks to the natural resources found throughout their island. The island was a center for trade and commerce. The rulers of this land held sway over the people and the land of their own island and well into Europe and Africa.

This was the island of Atlantis.

For generations, the Atlanteans lived simple, virtuous lives. But slowly they began to change. Greed and power began to corrupt them. The Atlanteans also threatened to reveal the magical world to the Muggles, hoping that the Muggles (in fear) would seek out and destroy the wizarding world (You have to remember that this was in early medieval times!). They would then of course have ultimate power. When Merlin saw and heard of the Atlanteans behavior, he called upon a tidal wave to wipe out the island.

Soon, in one violent surge, the island was gone. The island of Atlantis, its people, and its memory were swallowed by the sea. However, Merlin did not want the continent lost forever and so decided that Merpeople should profit from the Atlanteans greed.

Atlantis was the "reward" to the Merpeople for saving a lost (muggle/wizard) soul at sea. For Merpeople, Atlantis was like heaven on earth... a place not (legally) occupied by Muggles, or other magical races, where they could relax and enjoy examples of excellent food, lodging, and entertainment, for even though everything was swallowed by the sea, everything was still in perfect condition. Merpeople that were granted access to Atlantis were allowed to remain there indefineatly.

Witches/Wizards may use Atlantis after a meeting with the Mer Cheiftain (for you need to gain a permit) to harvest, for example, Gillyweed or other water plants or to capture, for example, Grindylows, Plimpys, or Shrake which are pests to Merpeople. Please note that permits are issued for one 24 hour period and any magical being that has no permit may be held under merpeople law(shudder... you don't want to go there!).
