After Roger Moore's leave in 1985, Timothy Dalton put on the shoes and stepped into the role of 007 with admireable talent. There's Something about him, he seems to fit the part very well. Not to say that I don't like Brosnan, because I do, but if Dalton had stayed with the role, I think he would have become a favourite with me. Now of course, he wouldn't surpass Moore, but still a favourite none the less!
In this adventure, a Russian General Koskov fakes a defection and fooled the British into helping him. Part of his plan involves a story he created about his higher authority KGB official, General Pushkin (John Rhyes-Davis). Koskov claims to the British that Pushkin has introduced Smiersh Spionem, a death to spies plot and which could cause great problems between countries. Claiming that he has grown insane, Koskov tricks the British into believing the scheme and Bond is sent out to eliminate him. Bond however, has suspicions, and he takes them into accordance, acting on his gut instinct. As the plot unfolds, Koskov's plan presents itself to be far more complicated and dangerous, containing millions of dollars in weapons and illegal drugs.
Q Explains a new Keyring Gadget to Bond
With help from Bond Girl Kara (Maryam d'Abo), 007 races to uncover Koskov's scheme before it's too late and, as expected, he ventures deep into enemy territory in hopes of doing so. The action in this movie never lets up and some great stunts, especially during the pre-title sequence and the climactic ending, add to the edge of your seat feeling. A great car chase by the snowy Austrian border, and an exciting desert battle
contribute to the movies overall riviting experience.
Unfortunately though, action alone cannot carry a movie and towards the end, the plot takes some nasty twists and turns, leaving you wondering what just happened. The acting is solid throughout and Timothy Dalton in my mind makes a fine James Bond. I feel he could have been one of the best, but he didn't last long enough. I appreciated his approach at playing Bond here in this film. He seems to portray Ian Fleming's original Bond quite well and his rugged human touch makes him a good addition to the list of leading Bond actors. The action and adreniline is enough to keep any viewer occupied, but the plot takes some confusing leaps and bounds towars the end.
