Goldfinger

(1964) Sean Connery

In 1964, United Artists put out one of the most classic action/adventure films of the decade. Coming after the blockbuster sequel From Russia with Love, Goldfinger, in my opinion is what proved to the world that the James Bond Movies was here to stay. Many were iffy about the future of Bond, but Goldfinger summed it all up and put many wondering minds in rest.

In this fast-paced adventure, Bond is after Auric Goldfinger, a tycoon with an obsession for gold. His diabolical scheme is to destroy the gold bullion supply of Fort Knox, aka operation "Grand Slam", rendering the gold surplus there, worthless so his supply would be in greater demand throughout the world's economies. Sidekicking him, is OddJob, the deadly Korean hat thrower. He doesn't speak, and he doesn't have to! Lot's of action and suspense. "Do you expect me to talk? -- No, Mr. Bond...I expect you to Die!".

Goldfinger explains his plan to Bond

As for the performances -- perfect. This was by far Connery's best Bond role, next to YOLT, and Honor Blackman as Pussy Galore also did a great job. Gert Frbe portrayed the role of the notorious Goldfinger and gave a wonderful performance and being one of the best villains in Bond history. Except for a few character flaws, the acting was great all through.

Many Bond fans consider this the best Bond movie ever made. As good as it is, to them I say "you can't be serious!". Yes, this was the movie in which Connery proved that he was one of the best. I'll agree with that. But ONE OF the best just doesn't cut it! Connery was great, but Moore was the best Bond. I admire Sean Connery as an actor much more than Roger Moore, however, when it comes to being 007, no-one comes close to Moore. As excellent as an era as the Connery one was, Roger Moore performed much better. And he is much closer to Ian Fleming's Bond, despite his wit and charismatic attitude. Connery was too serious. But in Goldfinger, he gave an excellent performance and depicted the role of Fleming's Bond better than he did in any other one of his appeareances.

In my opinion, this was one of the best, sure. But not THE best. It is exciting, suspenseful, passionate, and true Bond at it's best, but something just wasn't there for me to praise it as much as most Bond fans do. It didn't have the lasting effect like On Her Majesty's Secret Service. Just the same, Goldfinger is a must-see, for any Bond Enthusiast! Don't miss it!
